A 6-year-old child is in critical condition at a Portland-area hospital following a fiery, chain-reaction crash in southeast Salem Wednesday evening.

A portion of Kuebler Boulevard was closed for several hours after Salem Police and medics responded to the six-vehicle crash around 4 p.m., involving a one-ton truck pulling a loaded dump trailer, according to a release from the police department.

Witnesses told police the driver of the truck with the dump-trailer was traveling east on Kuebler near 36th Avenue, when it struck an eastbound Kia Soul, momentarily stopped in heavy traffic.

The force of the crash caused the Kia to slam into a Dodge Ram truck. Three more vehicles were struck in the chain-reaction crash.

A 6-year-old child riding in the rear passenger seat of the Kia Soul was taken to Salem Health with life-threatening injuries and later taken by Life Flight to a Portland-area hospital, police said.

Several other involved drivers suffered minor injuries but did not require a trip to the hospital.

Officials said all drivers remained on-scene and are cooperating with the investigation.

Police have not issued any citations or made any arrests in the crash.

This is a developing story.
