Traffic shift set for this weekend at I-69 work zone in Clinton, Eaton counties

DeWITT — Traffic through a construction zone on Interstate 69 in Clinton and Eaton counties will be shifted to the eastbound lanes on Saturday so crews can build new westbound lanes, state highway officials said.

Drivers will still have to deal with lane closures in both directions along the 5-mile-long zone between Airport Road and the Interstate 96 interchange, but they'll be rolling on new pavement, the Michigan Department of Transportation said.

The ramp from eastbound I-96 to eastbound I-69 will reopen, while the ramp from westbound I-69 to westbound I-96 will close, MDOT said.

The posted detour will use U.S. 127 south and I-96 west.

The $73-million rebuild began last year and is scheduled to be finished in November, although some bridge work won't happen until 2023.

The project includes rebuilding the interchanges at Francis and Airport roads and doing maintenance on more than a dozen bridges.

Meanwhile, drivers who use U.S. 127 in the Mason area could be affected by a pair of ramp closures tied to another multi-year road project.

Beginning Friday, drivers won't be able to get on or off the southbound lanes at Kipp Road so crews can work on the ramps, MDOT said. That work is expected to be finished in mid-August.

The ramp work is part of a $62-million project to repave the freeway and make other improvements between Mason and the Jackson County line.
