Traffic snarled after wrong-way crash on Route 130 kills one

Police update

WILLINGBORO - Burlington County officials said witnesses gave investigators bad information about a fatal head-on collision involving a wrong-way driver on Route 130 here.

The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a sedan was traveling south in a northbound lane on the divided highway near Beverly-Rancocas Road, according to a Facebook post from the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

The Facebook announcement initially shared incorrect information regarding the vehicles in the crash and was later updated to reflect the accurate account of the incident. The prosecutor's office said this was due to "inaccurate reports from eyewitnesses."

The sedan, driving in the wrong direction, collided with an oncoming SUV, before bursting into flames, according to the post.

The driver of the sedan did not survive and was alone in the vehicle, the prosecutor's office said. The driver of the SUV was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden and was expected to survive.

"A secondary collision occurred with a vehicle that was traveling behind the sedan," according to the prosecutor's office.

The driver of the third car was not injured, according to the post.

No charges were filed at the time of the release, and names of those involved had not been made public.

The accident is under investigation.

Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to call the Willingboro police tip line at 609-877-6958 or send an email to tips@co.burlington.nj.us.
