Kimberly Davis reports.
UKEE WASHINGTON: We begin with a gun battle that left a Philadelphia police officer shot and injured, and a suspect was killed. Good evening, everyone. I'm Ukee Washington.
JESSICA KARTALIJA: And I'm Jessica Katalija. It happened just before 7:00 tonight on the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue in Logan. Kimberly Davis is live with what led to that shooting and how the officer is doing tonight. Kimberly?
KIMBERLY DAVIS: Jessica, we received an update from Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw not too long ago. She tells us, this is all the result of a traffic stop. Officers were able to successfully conduct a traffic stop the first time. They tell us three people were inside that vehicle.
They ran three driver's licenses. Two came back with warrants out for their arrest. That's when Commissioner Outlaw tells us those officers called other officers for backup.
By the time those officers got to the scene, and they approached the vehicle for a second time, that's when police say a 24-year-old man got out of the vehicle and started firing at officers. Police officers fired back, killing that 24-year-old man. One officer was injured during that shooting. He is recovering here at Einstein Medical Center in stable condition.
- I just seen a lot of cops running and driving down the street, coming from different directions.
KIMBERLY DAVIS: It was a chaotic scene on the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue in the Logan neighborhood of Philadelphia. According to police, those squad cars were responding to an officer-involved shooting that started as a traffic stop around 6:45 Wednesday night.
ERIC GRIPP: The first two officers approached the vehicle. In the passenger side rear of the vehicle, they saw an individual male who was leaning back. And he quickly produced the gun and fired at least one round at the officers from inside the vehicle.
KIMBERLY DAVIS: Police tell us that at least five officers were on scene for that traffic stop. When the officers backed up, that's when police say the shooter got out of the car and fired at least one more round.
ERIC GRIPP: At that point, five officers that were outside of the vehicle discharged at the male multiple times. He was struck multiple times in the torso.
KIMBERLY DAVIS: The 24-year-old man who allegedly fired at police was rushed to Einstein Medical Center by officers, where he was pronounced dead. Nearby residents say they heard the bullets ring out.
- I heard gunfire, like, four on one side, then three, then maybe four more. By the time I got to the door, a ATV was going that way. Police cars was going that way.
KIMBERLY DAVIS: One officer was shot in the left foot during the ordeal. He is expected to be OK.
DANIELLE OUTLAW: He swore to uphold an oath and to protect our communities, to protect each other, and to keep each other safe, and I'm glad that our officers did that without hesitation.
KIMBERLY DAVIS: Police tell us a gun was recovered from the scene, but they have yet to identify that 24-year-old man who was shot and killed in the Logan section of Philadelphia. That's the very latest live outside of Einstein Medical Center. I'm Kimberly Davis, CBS 3, "Eyewitness News."
JESSICA KARTALIJA: Kimberly, thank you.
