Tragedy in Sanford: Grandfather, grandson die after being struck by car

SANFORD, Maine — A 65-year-old man and his 15-year-old grandson died Wednesday after a vehicle veered off the roadway and struck them both.

Sanford police Maj. Matthew Gagné said police responded to the incident near 19 Old Falls Road around 4:01 p.m.

He said a preliminary investigation indicates a brown 2000 Chevy Equinox went off the roadway after turning onto Old Falls Road from Kennebunk Road. When the vehicle left the roadway, Gagné said, it struck Michael Gilbar, 65, from Jericho, Vermont, and his grandson, a 15-year-old.

The juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene. Gilbar was transported by ambulance to Sanford Regional Airport for Lifeflight, but died before getting on the flight.

The driver of the vehicle, Gagné said, was transported by ambulance to Southern Maine Healthcare with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gagné said the cause of the crash is still under investigation. For the investigation, the crash is being reconstructed by the York County Sheriff’s Department.
