This week started off with a photo of behind-the-scenes Oscars prep work in Los Angeles. Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated this year’s ceremony, taking home many awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director (in this case, Directors).
The French Refuse
Over in Europe, Paris has been stinking…literally. After President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that he plans to raise the retirement age, trash collectors have protested by refusing to pick up trash, extending their nine-day strike for at least another five days. “It’s disgusting,” a restaurant staff member told the Guardian. “Customers aren’t coming in.”
California’s Extreme Weather
California saw an atmospheric river storm that resulted in widespread flooding. As of Wednesday morning, almost 200,000 people were without power, and around 30 million people across the state were under flood alerts. So far this winter, California has experienced 11 atmospheric river storms.
“If anyone has any doubt about Mother Nature and her fury, if anyone has any doubt about what this is all about in terms of what's happening to the climate and the changes that we are experiencing, come to California,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said.

On March 15, the coffin of Brianna Ghey was seen being carried from St. Elphin’s Church in Warrington, United Kingdom. Brianna, a transgender girl, was stabbed to death in Culcheth Linear Park, Cheshire, on the evening of Feb. 11. Police in England are searching for a teenager who was captured bullying and spewing racial slurs at two Nepalese British sisters in a video that has gone viral on social media. On Saturday, Kanti Gurung, 23, and her 16-year-old sister were walking around their hometown when she says a group of individuals started shouting racist slurs at them at around 4:45 p.m. local time in Maidstone, Kent. In the viral video, a girl with blonde hair — who social media users identified as Tammy Smith — can be seen racially mocking and trying to physically assault Gurung.
Building on the Las Vegas Strip presents a special series of challenges. When Caesars Entertainment has a palace and an Eiffel Tower, and MGM Resorts has a pyramid and a Statue of Liberty, and both own nothing but massive resorts, the bar to compete is very high. All those factors mean that a shocking number of Las Vegas projects get announced but not finished by their original owners.
The city recently settled a police sex harassment and false arrest lawsuit after the victim’s arrest in a 2018 traffic stop. “His actions could have ruined my life...” the victim said. “I am not the only one.”
Denver police has identified the suspect accused of opening fire against two deans at East High School Wednesday morning as 17-year-old Austin Lyle. Police said they're identifying the teen, which they don't normally do, because of the threat he poses to the public at this time.
