‘Tragic loss’: Georgetown High School mourning death of assistant football coach killed in shooting

Georgetown Public Schools is mourning the unexpected death of an assistant coach who worked on the staff of the town’s high school football team.

Georgetown High School assistant football coach Nelson Curet was killed during a double shooting in Roxbury early Saturday morning, Boston Police said Monday.

On Monday, Georgetown Superintendent Margaret Ferrick said Curet was “killed in an incident” in Boston over the weekend.

“The district is extremely saddened to hear of this tragic loss. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Coach Curet,” Ferrick said in a statement. “We ask that our community members keep Coach Curet’s loved ones in their thoughts during this time.”

Curet and another adult male were shot on McGreevy Way just after midnight Saturday, Boston Police said. Both victims were transported to local hospitals. After arriving at the hospital, Curet was pronounced deceased while the second victim’s injuries were deemed non-life threatening.

Georgetown High School Football Coach Mike Hill, Georgetown High School Principal Jeff Carovillano, and Superintendent Ferrick met with students and families associated with the football program for support on Sunday.

“Nelson was an integral member of the Georgetown football family. The impact that he had on the students is immeasurable,” Hill said. “His commitment to the support and development of the young men in the Georgetown community was bar none. We hold his family, children, the Mt. Ida community, and all that knew him in our thoughts.”

The district is working to facilitate travel for members of the football team to attend Coach Curet’s funeral.

Services will be held Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at the William F. Spencer & Son Funeral Home at 575 E. Broadway in South Boston. A burial will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery at 427 Cummins Highway in Boston.

Boston Police are still investigating the deadly shooting. As of yet, no arrests have been made.
