Trailer for Jo Koy’s first feature film ‘Easter Sunday’ released

Universal Pictures and Dreamworks Films released the official trailer for “Easter Sunday,” starring Filipino American stand-up comedian Jo Koy.
The film, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar and written by Ken Cheng, follows a fictionalized version of Koy as he returns home with his son to his “riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family” for an Easter celebration in the Bay Area, according to an official synopsis of the movie.
“Easter Sunday is like the Filipino Super Bowl,” Koy’s character says in the trailer.
“Easter Sunday,” inspired by the comedian’s own life experiences, is a love letter to the Filipino American community.
“Coming up as a kid, we didn't have anything like this to get inspired by. When I was watching movies, you had to wait for the credits to find out if anyone was Filipino,” Koy said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “When I saw Dante Basco in ‘Hook,’ going through the credits, I'm like, ‘Oh, he's definitely Filipino.’ But that was our way of being inspired indirectly when I was a kid. And now I have that opportunity to provide this inspiration and this opening.”
The first trailer features clips of a Filipino family having a karaoke session, attending a Catholic mass and putting together a “Balikbayan” box. It also hints at a family feud between the comedian’s mother and his auntie.
The film also stars Jimmy O. Yang, Tia Carrere, Brandon Wardell, Eva Noblezada, Lydia Gaston, Asif Ali, Rodney To, Eugene Cordero, Jay Chandrasekhar, Tiffany Haddish and Lou Diamond Phillips.
“Easter Sunday” is set to premiere in theaters on Aug. 5.
