Trails at Palo Duro Canyon State Park start to reopen after heavy rains

Texas Parks and Wildlife on Saturday announced that work is underway and several trails and camping areas have been reopened at Palo Duro Canyon State Park following recent flooding.

The following trails were set to open Saturday: Lighthouse, Capitol Peak, and CCC.

"Kudos to our volunteer trail crew for their hard work in helping us get these trails ready for use by the public," the park said in a social media update. "These trails may be hazardous in some areas, so be sure to use caution. We are advising extra caution when biking these trails, as they have many more holes and ruts that were not present before. All other trails remain closed."

Park officials said the road is open to the Fortress Cliff Campground. However, a portion of Park Road 5 beyond the Lighthouse Parking Lot, and a portion of the Park 5 Alternate Road beyond the Fortress Cliff Campground, are both closed until at least June 19. Officials are working with the Texas Department of Transportation to clear the roads.

As of Friday, the Hackberry and Fortress Cliff camping areas are open, but sites 1-9 in Hackberry are closed until at least June 23.

Due to the extreme amounts of rain, the Juniper, Wolfberry, and Mesquite campgrounds, as well as the Youth Group Area, Backcountry Camping Area, the Tasajillo Pavilion, and the Cow Camp Cabins, are all closed. They are projected to reopen Monday, June 19 as well.

TEXAS the Outdoor Musical is occurring under normal operations.

In addition, the park is no longer under a boil water notice.
