Train Derailment Sends Flames, Smoke Into Southern Illinois Sky

Several cars of a freight train derailed and caught fire in Dupo, Illinois, on Tuesday, September 10, sending flames and black smoke into the sky.

The crash happened near Vertex Chemical Corporation, and firefighters were trying to keep the flames from spreading to the building, local media said.

Citing officials, local media said two schools in the area were evacuated “as a precautionary measure.”

The St Clair County Emergency Management Agency said power was being cut in the nearby East Carondelet community due to “high tension lines over the fire.”
