Train Moving Crude Oil Burns After Derailing in Northwest Washington
A train moving crude oil derailed and caught fire in Custer, Washington, near the Canadian border, on Tuesday, December 22, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Footage recorded by Denae Johnson shows smoke billowing from burning carriages after the train went off the tracks.
The train’s operator, BNSF Railway, said between three and five of the train’s carriages derailed at around 11:40 am.
Local authorities told civilians near the site to evacuate the area, but residents were allowed to return to their homes later that day.
Nearby roadways, including a part of Interstate 5, were temporarily closed to traffic.
