Trained weather spotter classes set

Want to be a trained weather spotter? The Northern Indiana office of the National Weather Service has scheduled classes to help them with reporting weather events, from snowstorms to tornadoes.

Registration is open for four virtual sessions, each approximately two hours long. Participants will be instructed what, when and how to report weather events, learn about late season severe and winter weather, and be able to ask questions during the session.

The four sessions scheduled are 6 p.m. Oct. 11, 1 p.m. Oct. 13, 11 a.m. Oct. 15 and 6 p.m. Oct. 18. All times are Eastern Daylight Time. Those participating from the Central Daylight Time zone would log in one hour earlier than the times noted above.

A trained weather spotter reports observations and data collected to the National Weather Service to assist with compiling information on a severe weather incident. Spotters may have weather equipment such as wind and rain measurement devices, or submit photographs of damage, funnel clouds or tornadoes, downed trees or limbs, or hail.

Upon successful completion of the session, the service will offer a printable certificate.
