Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Brighton’s Leandro Trossard after they were pipped to the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykhailo Mudryk by Chelsea. The 28-year-old forward has fallen out with manager Roberto De Zerbi and looked likely to leave the Seagulls during this transfer window with Arsenal keen to boost their forward line. Trossard is an adaptable player and would provide cover for both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli on the wings as well as Martin Odegaard through the middle as the Gunners chase down a first Premier League title since 2004.

Up in the North East, Newcastle continue to do business and are negotiating with Nottingham Forest over a loan move for striker Chris Wood. He was one of Eddie Howe’s first signings at the club but with Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak fit again Wood may be surplus to requirements. That definitely would be the case if the Magpies are successful in signing their next target: Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Newcastle are reportedly preparing a £35million bid for the striker.

Elsewhere, West Ham have enquired to sign Danny Ings from Aston Villa with the forward undergoing a medical at the London side later today. His signing could ease the pressue on manager David Moyes who is said to be facing the axe should his team fail to beat relegation rivals Everton at the weekend.

‘Our fans have to push us’: Pep Guardiola challenges Man City supporters

15:30 , Michael Jones

Pep Guardiola has called on Manchester City’s fans to help his team rediscover their lost sparkle.

The City manager was far from happy after his side needed to overturn a 2-0 half-time deficit to get back to winning ways against Tottenham on Thursday.

The champions had been staring at the prospect of a third successive loss in all competitions before they fought back to claim a 4-2 win and cut Arsenal’s Premier League lead to five points.

Guardiola had said after Saturday’s derby loss to Manchester United that he felt something was lacking and the first-half display against Spurs – which prompted a small section of fans to boo at the interval – did not change his opinion.

Brighton boss lifts lid on Leandro Trossard’s imminent exit to Arsenal

15:20 , Michael Jones

Roberto De Zerbi is regretful at how the last few weeks have unfolded with Leandro Trossard, but is confident Brighton can cope without the outgoing forward.

Trossard has not played for the Seagulls since their 4-2 defeat against Arsenal on New Year’s Eve and it is understood he is on the verge of sealing a transfer to the Premier League leaders.

He was dropped ahead of last weekend’s match against Liverpool after leaving training early without permission, and his agent has urged cooperation on a switch which is “beneficial for both parties”.

David Moyes facing the chop?

15:10 , Michael Jones

Sticking with West Ham for the moment, it looks as though manager David Moyes could be facing the axe if his team fail to defeat relegation rivals Everton this weekend.

The pressure has been slowly building on Moyes with his team unable to get out of the relegation zone. They are one point away from safety but lead 19th placed Everton on goal difference.

This weekend’s clash is a vital one for their prospects of remaining in the top flight and West Ham are reportedly preparing to move on from Moyes should he fail to beat his old club.

Another ex-Everton boss, Rafa Benitez, is said to be in line for the job with Moyes now the bookies favourite to be the next Premier League boss to get sacked.

Newcastle target Calvert-Lewin

15:00 , Michael Jones

Newcastle’s willingness to offload Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest may be a sign of confidence that they can get a move for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin over the line before the transfer window ends.

The Toffees have lacked goals this season so it seems unlikely that they would let the striker leave unless an offer from Newcastle was too good to turn down.

The Magpies are considering a £35m move for Calvert-Lewin despite his struggles with injury in recent seasons, reports The Sun.

The 25-year-old has scored just six goals since the start of last season but has had his playing time hampered due to a number of injury concerns.

Arsenal agree Leandro Trossard fee with Brighton

14:50 , Michael Jones

Arsenal have reached agreement with Brighton and Hove Albion to sign Leandro Trossard for £27m. The south-coast club had been looking for £30m, with 10% of any fee to go to Genk, but have settled for a shade less than that amount.

Arsenal are actively looking for attacking reinforcements to deepen their title challenge having missed out on Mikhailo Mudryk, and Brighton are keen to sell due to manager Roberto De Zerbi no longer wishing to use the forward.

Trossard’s current contract runs out in the summer, albeit with an option to extend, which is why his price is relatively low for a recently turned 28-year-old with proven Premier League experience. Brighton did not want to let him go too cheaply though.

His representatives have been pushing for a deal all window and, while there was interest from a series of clubs, Arsenal represented by far the best option. Trossard is naturally keen on the move and pushing for it, with that aided by a good relationship between the clubs.

Newcastle chasing replacement as Chris Wood joins Nottingham Forest

14:40 , Michael Jones

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is hopeful he can replace the outgoing Chris Wood, warning that the striker’s move could leave the team “dangerously short of players”.

Howe confirmed that Wood is having a medical with Nottingham Forest, with Forest looking to bring the New Zealand international in on loan.

Wood joined the Magpies last January from Burnley for £25million, helping the club avoid relegation and Howe was full of praise for the forward’s contributions.

Erik ten Hag hints at further January transfer business for Man Utd

14:30 , Michael Jones

Erik ten Hag has said he is looking to bolster Manchester United’s squad further before the end of the transfer window.

United’s budget is limited after they overspent in the summer and Ten Hag’s first January arrival was striker Wout Weghorst on loan from Championship club Burnley.

But the Dutchman has revealed he is trying to find a way to bring in other players. He said: “As Manchester United you always have to look for solutions and always you have to look for better and that is what we will do.

“We will be doing our research and if there are opportunities we have to go for it.”

Atletico sign Depay

14:20 , Michael Jones

Atletico Madrid have announced the signing of Memphis Depay from Barcelona.

The Dutch international forward has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Sky Sports News revealed last week that Barcelona could explore the possibility of re-signing Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the event of Depay moving to Atletico and now that the deal is done Aubameyang could make a return to LaLiga.

Leicester targeting Souttar

14:10 , Michael Jones

Leicester have made an approach to Stoke about a possible deal for centre back Harry Souttar.

Brendan Rodgers was keen to sign a new central defender, even before Wesley Fofana made his big-money move to Chelsea, and Souttar has caught the Leicester boss’ eye for his aerial prowess and ability on the ball.

Only three Premier League teams have conceded more goals than Leicester so far this season, so strengthening the defence is Rodgers’ top priority but Stoke manager Alex Neil has said the club “have no aspirations to sell Harry”.

West Ham seal signing of Danny Ings from Aston Villa

14:00 , Michael Jones

West Ham United have completed the signing of striker Danny Ings from Aston Villa.

Ings has joined the Hammers for an undisclosed fee, understood to be around £12million, until the summer of 2025.

The 30-year-old is eligible for an immediate debut in Saturday’s crunch home meeting with fellow strugglers Everton.

“I’m really excited to join West Ham United,” said Ings. “It’s important I settle in as quickly as I can do – and do the important stuff on the pitch for West Ham.”

Ouattara joins Bournemouth

13:50 , Michael Jones

Yesterday, Bournemouth completed the signing of Dango Ouattara for £20m from French side Lorient on a five and a half year contract.

Ouattara becomes the first new arrival under new owner Bill Foley and arrives at the Vitality Stadium having scored six goals and created six assist in 18 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

The 20-year-old winger signed his first professional contract on 20th May 2021 and made his senior debut for the club against AS Saint-Etienne, which finished in a 1-1 draw.In his breakthrough season, Ouattara made 25 appearances, scoring his first goal in April 2022 against FC Metz.

Middlesbrough to bid again for Nkrumah

13:43 , Michael Jones

Middlesbrough are expected to table a second offer for Leyton Orient’s Daniel Nkrumah after having already had one bid turned down for the 19-year-old.

Nkrumah is expected to be part of Leyton Orient’s first team squad this weekend after being on the bench last Saturday following his recall from loan.

Leyton Orient see him as a player for the future and are hoping to hold onto his services despite Boro’s interest.

Could Zidane replace Potter?

13:35 , Michael Jones

The Daily Express are reporting that Chelsea are looking into the possibility of bringing in Zinedine Zidane to replace manager Graham Potter despite giving Potter assurances that they are focused on a long-term project.

Potter’s side are in a poor run of form, which has seen them drop to 10th in the table and 10 points off the Champions League spots.

Champions League football is a crucial money maker for the big clubs and the Sun are claiming that Chelsea could be set for an “unpredictable” FFP future after their heavy spending if they were to fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Should that happen would the Blues hierarchy oust Potter and bring in Zidane?

Bellerin rejects Everton move

13:27 , Michael Jones

Hector Bellerin is said to have ‘rejected’ an offer from Everton this month.

The Barcelona right-back has made only one league start this season and is very much at the bottom of the pecking order with the Spanish giants.

Bellerin is actively looking for move away from the club and is out of contract at the end of the season. He has received offers from Premier League teams. Spanish media outlet Sport claim that one of the interested clubs is Everton but Bellerin has ruled out a move to Goodison Park.

Man Utd rejected Maguire loan offer

13:12 , Michael Jones

Manchester United have reportedly rejected an approach from West Ham to sign Harry Maguire on loan until the end of the season.

The Mail claim David Moyes’ side looked at signing the United captain this month but were met with a negative response from Old Trafford’s transfer chiefs.

West Ham were hopeful a similar deal could be struck to the successful loan of Jesse Lingard two years ago, however, manager Erik ten Hag is keen to keep Maguire and promptly turned down the offer.

Danny Ings signs for West Ham

12:51 , Michael Jones

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of Danny Ings from Aston Villa.

A statement on the club website reads: ‘West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of proven Premier League striker Danny Ings.

‘Ings, a senior England international, has joined the Hammers from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee until the summer of 2025.

‘All paperwork was submitted ahead of the midday deadline for the player to be eligible for tomorrow’s Premier League fixture against Everton at London Stadium and the Club expects it will receive formal confirmation this afternoon.

Steve Cooper wants Jesse Lingard at Nottingham Forest ‘the longer the better’

12:45 , Michael Jones

Steve Cooper does not know how long Jesse Lingard will stay at Nottingham Forest but wants it to be as long as possible.

Lingard, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, surprised many when he opted to join newly promoted Forest on a one-year deal in the summer following his release from Manchester United.

He endured a slow start at the City Ground, but was improving before suffering an untimely injury on his return to United at the end of December.

The 30-year-old spoke about his exit from Old Trafford and how much he is enjoying life at the City Ground on the Diary of a CEO podcast this week.

Cooper hopes Lingard stays with Forest

12:38 , Michael Jones

Nottingham Forest boss, Steve Cooper, is hopeful that Jesse Lingard will extend his stay at the City Ground beyond the end of his one-year contract but admits he doesn’t know whether that will be the case.

When asked he he saw Lingard at the club for the next few years, Cooper said: “My honest answer is, I don’t know. With regards to his situation here, he is very much part of what we’re doing on and off the pitch.

“Even with the games he hasn’t played recently because of injury, you can see his engagement in the dressing room and by the side of the dugout. It’s no show – although some of his tracksuits need a mention, but that’s another matter!

“It’s just generally how he is every day. When you see him and when you don’t, he’s a very infectious, hard-working, committed lad.

“We’re really enjoying working with him. How long it will be for – the longer the better, for me. But we don’t know.

“At some stage we’re going to have to have the discussion with him. But the fact he says he’s happy and content pleases me, because that’s always what I want for a player – for their self-worth to be high, because that’s when you get the best out of them. And if we get the best out of Jesse, then we’ve got a good player.

“The main thing for Jesse at the minute is to get him back fit and playing. We’re not looking beyond that.”

Arsenal looking at Bournemouth winger

12:30 , Michael Jones

Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony has emerged as a potential target for Arsenal as his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old winger came through the Arsenal academy before joining Bournemouth and has mainly been used off the bench by the Cherries this season.

He played a key role in their promotion from the Championship last season and is off interest to other top tier clubs.

Leicester City are also monitoring his situation and there is also interest from Bundesliga clubs Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool and Chelsea meet having taken very different routes to the same place

12:23 , Michael Jones

“He doesn’t wait long,” said Jurgen Klopp. “Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters as well?” It was in September and the German was quick to mock Todd Boehly’s idea for a Premier League all-star game. The new Chelsea owner had made an impression on the long-serving Liverpool manager: just not a positive one.

Fast forward four months and, if such notional sides were picked on top-flight form, perhaps neither Liverpool nor Chelsea would need worry about their players being injured in a glorified exhibition match. They met in two cup finals last season. Now they face off as ninth and 10th in the Premier League. Boehly’s southern all-stars could instead feature more players from Brighton, Brentford and Fulham than the club with the biggest transfer outlay in any season in history.

The alternative interpretation is that Boehly intends every Chelsea match to be an all-star game. He has just signed the rising star of this season’s Champions League, in Mykhailo Mudryk, and tried to buy his World Cup counterpart, in Enzo Fernandez. Joao Felix, Atletico Madrid’s £100million prodigy, was supposed to be a global star.

Wolves and West Ham agree deal for Dawson

12:15 , Michael Jones

Wolves has been pushing to sign Craig Dawson since the summer transfer window and now they have agreed a £3.3m fee with West Ham to bring the experienced defender to the midlands.

Wolves’ bid for Dawson was said to have angered West Ham manager David Moyes last week as the approach came just before the sides met in the Premier League.

West Ham lost the match 1-0 and dropped into the bottom three, with Wolves jumping out of the relegation zone.

Dawson himself is keen for the move as he would like to be closer to his family who live in the midlands but the deal is not expected to go through until next week.

Soh going out on loan

12:07 , Michael Jones

Nottingham Forest centre-back Loic Mbe Soh is set to join Guingamp on loan for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old has only made three appearances for Forest in the domestic cup competitions this season despite being part of their Championship promotion campaign last year.

Forest are also hoping to loan out striker Lyle Taylor and central-midfielder Cafu with Dale Taylor’s loan to Burton Albion nearing completion.

Spurs looking into loan deals

12:00 , Michael Jones

Tottenham have enquired about signing Nicolo Zaniolo on loan from Roma.

The left-footed attacking midfielder can play on the wing and has made 13 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side but it remains to be seen whether the Italian side would let him leave in the middle of the season.

Everton boss Frank Lampard: Southampton defeat was a reality check for us

11:53 , Michael Jones

Everton manager Frank Lampard believes the importance of team spirit and commitment has become a clearer reality for his players as their league position worsens.

Last Saturday’s home match against bottom side Southampton was the club’s biggest fixture since they escaped relegation in the penultimate game of the 2021/22 season.

Defeat means the trip to 18th-placed West Ham, only above Everton on goal difference, is now the biggest 90 minutes of the season so far, and Lampard thinks last weekend may be the wake-up call his players need.

Danjuma to Everton?

11:45 , Michael Jones

Arnaut Danjuma could be set for a move to Goodison Park with Everton are hopeful that the winger will agree to join on loan from Villarreal after the 25-year old considered offers from a number of clubs.

Danjuma has been granted permission to leave the LaLiga club on loan until the end of the season and attracted interest across a host of top flight clubs, including Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest.

The winger spoke to the Toffees at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground last weekend, as well as completing tours of Forest, Bournemouth, and Rennes in France.

The Telegraph claim that Danjuma has made his choice and put Everton at the top of the list of clubs to join in January.

Saints in talks with Roma for right-back

11:37 , Michael Jones

Southampton spoken to Roma about signing right-back Rick Karsdorp on loan until the end of the season but the clubs are quite a way off a deal.

Roma are not keen on a loan move and prefer to sell the player outright because Karsdorp has fallen out with manager Jose Mourinho.

He has reportedly been offered to other Premier League clubs looking for right-backs this month.

‘A happy flowers team’: What Pep Guardiola’s outburst says about him and Man City

11:30 , Michael Jones

At one point in a remarkable media appearance, Pep Guardiola kind of twirled his hands into the air, as he discussed the ambition of his Manchester City team.

“The players want it, but there is something here, in the clouds.”

He might well have been describing his own post-match press conference, that maybe even surpassed the 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in terms of theatrics. The actual football certainly felt like a fairly distant memory by the time Guardiola was in mid-flow.

It is striking to think that this was a figure who had apparently been so serene at half-time. His City players had gone in to the dressing room having just conceded twice in two minutes and expected to be castigated. There was instead silence for a while before Guardiola forensically talked them through what was required.

He outlined the blueprint to win the game. It was only afterwards that he addressed how to beat out Arsenal to win the title, making him much more agitated.

Guedes leaving Wolves?

11:22 , Michael Jones

Goncalo Guedes’ is set to leave Wolves after just five months with the Portuguese forward closing in on a loan move to Benfica.

Guedes arrived last summer for a fee of £27.5m after an impressive spell at Valencia but the 26-year-old has scored just twice in 18 appearances.

He will reportedly join Benfica for the rest of the campaign on a straight loan in the hopes of regaining some of his previous form.

Gordon on Newcastle radar

11:15 , Michael Jones

Anthony Gordon is being targeted by Newcastle United once again as they consider a January move for the Everton forward as an option to replace the outgoing Chris Wood.

The Magpies showed plenty of interest in signing Gordon back in the summer but the high price demanded from Everton ensured that the 21-year-old remained at Goodison Park.

A latest report by The Telegraph states that Newcastle are renewing ther interest in Gordon after their last bid was rejected during the previous transfer window.

The case for Antonio Conte weakens further after latest Tottenham blunders

11:07 , Michael Jones

It was not the first time Antonio Conte made history against Manchester City. This time, however, it was a first for him, not for Pep Guardiola. Go back six seasons and he was the first manager to do a league double over Guardiola. It meant he joined that select group of coaches, with a winning record against the Spaniard. When Tottenham Hotspur took a 2-0 advantage at half-time, his lead was stretching to 4-2 in their duel in the dugout. Instead, there was a different 4-2 scoreline: a City win.

There was a novel element for Conte. “To concede four goals for me is not good and it is not good to concede four goals in the second half,” he said. “This is my first time in my career one of my teams has conceded four goals in one half.”

And, somehow, Tottenham have become the antithesis of a Conte team. His first Serie A title as a manager came as Juventus conceded 20 goals in 38 league games. Spurs have let in 21 in their last 10 alone. They finished last season with three straight clean sheets, conceding two goals in their last six games. Now they invariably let in two in each match. “Compared to last season we are conceding a lot more goals,” the Italian said.

Portsmouth appoint Mousinho as head coach

11:00 , Michael Jones

Portsmouth Football Club have confirmed John Mousinho as the club’s new head coach.

The 36-year-old previously served as player-coach at League One rivals Oxford United and joins on an undisclosed ‘long-term’ contract.

“I’m delighted to be appointed Pompey head coach and am excited to get started in the role.” Mousinho said,

“The club and I are share similar ambitions and we’re focused on delivering the short and long-term success that the supporters here deserve.

“After meeting with Andrew Cullen and Richard Hughes, I really bought into the process and am pleased that the club have also bought into me, giving me this fantastic opportunity.

“I want our team to play on the front foot, with aggressive and attacking football that will win games and entertain the fans.”

Howe on Wood departure

10:52 , Michael Jones

Newcastle boss, Eddie Howe, says that Chris Wood’s loan move to Nottingham Forest happened quite suddenly and that the club will look to replace the forward if the deal gets over the line.

“Three or four days ago this wasn’t on my horizon.” said Howe, “January can be very unpredictable and we need to be able to react.

“Chris is having a medical right about now. He’s been outstanding for us, he played a huge part transforming the team. We need to take into account the player’s wishes, but it’s also a very good deal financially for the club.

“We are hopefully planning to replace him but there’s no guarantees. There was no thought of letting a player go and not replacing them.

“But there aren’t players with his skill set in the market.”

Sheffield United placed under embargo

10:45 , Michael Jones

Sheffield United have been placed under a transfer embargo, as the EFL investigates claims of non-payment of historical transfer fees.

The League organisers will make their decision public in the coming days unless the Blades settle their outstanding debts. At the minute it means that the Blades are blocked from making any new signings in this transfer window.

Sheffield United cancelled the loan of Brighton’s Reda Khadra earlier this month and Sky Sports News reports that the embargo has been issued because of an overdue payment to another club for a player who moved to Bramall Lane last year.

De Zerbi on Caicedo situation

10:37 , Michael Jones

There are plenty of interested parties in Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo with Chelsea pushing the club for a deal. Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi believes the best thing for Caicedo is to remain with the club for the time being after Brighton seemingly turned down a £55m bid from the Blues.

“It’s difficult to change [him] with another player inside of the season.” said De Zerbi, “I hope he finishes the season with us, but in the transfer market it’s always difficult to give an answer.

“When there are some big teams who want our player, it’s good news for us. The best solution is that he can finish the season with us, and in the summer would be better for a change.

“If Caicedo continues to play like he has in the last games, it’s possible he can leave for another team.”

Gundogan to Barcelona?

The Sun claim that Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has agreed a free transfer to Barcelona in the summer according to reports in Spain.

Dembele set for Premier League return?

10:15 , Michael Jones

Moussa Dembele could be heading back to the Premier League with Aston Villa and Everton both battling it out for his signature. The former Fulham striker has found himself out of favour at French side Lyon after only managing to score two goals all season.

The Sun are reporting that both Premier League clubs are keen to bring Dembele back to the English top flight and are negotiating with Lyon over a deal.

New Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran must be given time to make his mark in the Premier League, according to boss Unai Emery.

The Colombia international is joining Villa for around £18million from Chicago Fire.

The club have also agreed to sell Danny Ings to West Ham for £15million with Emery revamping his forward line.

He insisted Duran is not expected to replace Ings – with Villa also after another striker – and patience is required with the 19-year-old.

Newcastle target Calvert-Lewin

Interest in Elanga grows

09:55 , Michael Jones

Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga is the subject of interest from many clubs across Europe with Everton and Borussia Dortmund among those in signing the young star.

Everton were keen to bring in the 20-year-old on loan for the rest of the season but that move has been blocked by Manchester United because of their concerns over the ‘climate’ at Goodison Park, reports the Daily Star.

The report claims that United boss Erik ten Hag is not willing to let Elanga go to Everton, due to concerns about what the current climate at Goodison Park might do to Elanga’s development and progress.

Borussia Dortmund have also enquired about signing the winger with United set to make a decision about their interest in the coming days.

David Moyes facing the chop?

09:48 , Michael Jones

Danny Ings has travelled to London to undergo a medical assessment with West Ham after the club agreed a deal for the striker to join them from Aston Villa.

The Hammers set to pay around £15m for the England international who will hopefully provide some much needed goals for David Moyes’ team.

Ings has scored six Premier League goals in 18 games this season for Villa and should add competition to the Hammers’ front line alongside Gianluca Scamacca and Michail Antonio.

West Ham have scored only 15 goals in 19 league games this term with their lack of form in front of goal a major factor as to why they’re in the relegation zone.

Arsenal agree Leandro Trossard fee with Brighton
