Meanwhile, Chelsea reportedly have a ‘verbal agreement’ in place to sign Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid as the Portuguese superstar looks set to move club in the January transfer window. A loan fee of around €11m has apparently been agreed, with Chelsea fending off Premier League rivals Manchester United and Arsenal for the 23-year-old forward’s signature.

Man Utd are aiming to replace Cristiano Ronaldo and are targeting Netherlands international Wout Weghorst. The striker is currently on loan at Besiktas from Burnley until the end of the season and the Turkish side have said they are willing to negotiate compensation for the cancellation of his loan if he secures another move this month. United are now said to have agreed the fundamentals of a loan deal with Burnley but are still awaiting agreement between the Clarets and Besiktas.

Portugal have confirmed the appointment of Roberto Martinez as new national team manager.

Former Belgium boss Martinez succeeds Fernando Santos, whose eight-year reign came to an end after the Qatar World Cup.

It concluded a famous era for the Selecao, including the Euro 2016 triumph and victory in the Nations League in 2019.
