Transfer portal: Walter Clayton is leaving Iona

Walter Clayton was a massive reason why Iona had such a tremendous season en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. And the sophomore’s strong performances for the Gaels will put him in demand for other programs.

On Monday, Clayton entered the transfer portal, becoming one of the top available talents on the market.

The 6-foot-2 guard from Lake Wales, FL averaged 16.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game last season. He made 31 starts for Iona. He shot from 45.5 percent from the floor and 43.1 percent from 3-point range.

Last season, Clayton was 95.3 percent as a free throw shooter.

In the NCAA Tournament against No. 4 UConn, Clayton scored 15 points with four rebounds and four assists in an 87-63 loss.

Now Clayton might not really be on the open market as it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him follow head coach Rick Pitino to the Big East. On Monday, Pitino was formally announced as the new men’s basketball head coach at St. John’s.
