Buttigieg, an openly gay member of Democratic President Joe Biden's cabinet who recently moved to Michigan with his husband, Chasten, and their two children, was asked about the homophobic tweet Maddock posted Sunday that referenced him.

"We’re so blessed this weak little girl moved to Michigan!" Maddock tweeted. "Looks like he’s bringing all his California Dreaming here with him."

Buttigieg said of Maddock: "She wants to talk about little girls. Chasten and I are raising a little girl, and a little boy, and we are raising them to have better values."

The rest, he said, "is politics."

Maddock's tweet has drawn widespread condemnation, some of it from within her own party.
