Husbands Matthew Schueller and Michael Lindsay return with their LGBTQ+ memories and secrets for Los Cabo, Mexico.

The happy, smart, and sexy duo are no strangers to Out Travelers, who were introduced to the married world travelers and their meet-cute in our Spring 2022 print edition. The social media savvy Schueller came out on his YouTube channel in a viral video that inspired Lindsay to come out himself and record a video reply, albeit a year later and 1,300 miles away. The rest is history, as they say.

The pair married in 2018, and when they’re not posting about their travels and life together on their social media, Schueller works as a nurse and Lindsay is a practicing dentist.

Los Cabos is littered with fantastic restaurants, and the culinary culture is quickly growing. Every time we return, we find new up-and-coming establishments that pique our interest. El Huerto’s farm-to-table concept brings a whole new level of excellence to our understanding of locally sourced cuisine. Not only will you enjoy food from land and sea, but your plate will also be full of only organically grown produce and free-range naturally fed meats. Join them for dinner to dine under the stars amongst their impeccably curated outdoor seating areas. The unsung hero of the menu may be the wood-fired pizzas, I promise you will not be disappointed. Among other highlights are CarbónCabrón, Flora Farms and Torote Restaurant by Valle de Sol. If you find yourself in central San Jose del Cabo, make a reservation at Agave Kitchen, La Lupita Taco & Mezcal or Jardin Secreto. Lastly for breakfast, brunch or cocktail, stop by the famous Ruba’s Bakery for something delicious.

Though we’ve stayed at a number of rentals in the area that feature pristine cliffside views of the Sea of Cortez, if you’re looking for a fantastic resort in close proximity to both San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, check in to the Hacienda del Mar Resort & Spa. Some of my favorite memories from Los Cabos are simply chilling on the beach at the Hacienda watching the sunset as crystal blue waves crash toward me. The 4-star hotel provides spacious airy quarters, multiple outdoor pools, and quite a few great bars and restaurants to choose from. Our favorites at the resort include De Cortez Restaurant, Tortuga Bar, and Pitahayas.

What’s the LGBTQ+ culture like there?

Los Cabos is extremely gay-friendly and actively celebrates by hosting Pride yearly in the month of June. Though the gay scene is typically quite low-key, it doesn’t miss on hospitality. If you’re looking for great bars and nightclubs, keep in mind that things start late in Mexico. Most bars and clubs don’t start getting busy until around 11 p.m. or midnight. Chandelier’s is the main gay nightclub in Los Cabos and is open from 9pm to late Thursdays through Sundays, featuring gogo dancers and drag performances. El Squid Roe is another hotspot with multiple floors of dancing with DJs, drinks and plenty of tacos. Old Town San Jose del Cabo is super lively on any given weekend night, so when in doubt head to the Old Town!

What are the must-do activities while visiting?

One of my favorite experiences while visiting Los Cabos is getting out on the water. The Sea of Cortez is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, and so there’s plenty of wildlife to spot all along Baja California Sur. We had a blast on the Whale Watching Tour with Cabo Adventures. We saw a ton of humpback whales, orcas, and even dolphins. There are also snorkeling tours available to view the wildlife around the reefs. If you’re looking for something more thrilling, check out Wild Canyon Adventures for 4-wheeling, ziplining, bungee jumping, and more. The San Jose del Cabo Art Walk is a fantastic outdoor market experience that runs from 5-9 p.m. from November through June and is an absolute must to experience for first-time visitors.

Probably the most iconic and famous natural structure in the area is El Arco. This natural rock formation arches at the very end of Baja California Sur. Many boat tours are available to view the formation, and it is a notorious backdrop for proposal and engagement photos alike. Next to El Arco is the popular Playa de los Amantes, or beach of the lovers. This pristine golden-sand beach is bordered by stunning rock formations and bright blue water. For a great opportunity for photography in the evening, make a dinner reservation at Flora Farms and enjoy taking photos around their beautiful outdoor garden. The view from Flora Farms is also quite stunning. The most historic and authentically Mexican part of Los Cabos is the Old Town in San Jose del Cabo. The downtown area features quintessential Spanish architecture, a large stone plaza in front of an 18th century church, and plenty of narrow streets with colorful flags flying overhead.

WHAT HAPPENS in Cabo STAYS in Cabo | Our Cute Mexico Love Affair

I went bungee jumping for the first time in my life at Wild Canyon Adventures, and I can still remember the visceral feeling I had in the pit of my stomach as my feet left the platform. I didn’t know quite what to expect or how my body would react, but I’d never experienced anything like that before! As I began to free-fall, my body automatically went into a complete panic – I screamed louder than I think I’d ever screamed before. I flailed my arms like a madman, and everything stopped as the tension on the bungee cord tightened, and I ricocheted upwards. It was the most surreal experience seeing the canyon dangle below me. I don’t consider myself an adrenaline junky, but it was truly something I never saw myself ever doing and it completely changed how I look at trying new things. I think it broke me in a way that I’ll never turn down something that kind of scares me again… we also got a video of it and it’s probably the most embarrassing clip of myself that exists on our YouTube channel.
