Travelers Rest man charged after 17 tons of tires dumped illegally in Spartanburg County

A Travelers Rest man has been arrested after more than 1,000 tires weighing a total of 17 tons were dumped illegally in Spartanburg County.

Terry Scott Owens Jr. was charged with five counts of littering exceeding 500 pounds, according to the Spartanburg County Office of Environmental Enforcement.

State fines for illegal dumping of more than 500 pounds range from $500 to $1,000 plus being ordered to clean up the trash dumped.

According to the arrest warrants signed by Magistrate David James Turner, the incidents occurred between Nov. 19, 2022, and April 17, 2023:

Nov. 19, 2022: 30 tires weighing 1,300 pounds were dumped illegally on Tapp Circle in Lyman.

Feb. 28, 2023: 157 tires weighing 6,860 pounds were dumped illegally on Shelburne Lane, Lyman.

March 7, 2023: 700 tires weighing 20,400 pounds were dumped illegally at 2090 E. Poinsett St. Extended, Greer.

April 17, 2023: 84 tires weighing 2,300 pounds were dumped illegally at 2120 E. Main St., Duncan.

April 17, 2023: 159 tires weighing 4,760 pounds were dumped illegally at 13195 E. Wade Hampton Blvd., Lyman.

Owens was booked Saturday at Spartanburg County Detention Center and has since been released.
