Will you be traveling through Austin’s airport soon? We’ve got some useful tips to help make your travels through the busy hub go more smoothly!
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) has seen recent travel surges and says they expect 30% more seats to be available through the airport compared with summer 2019.
Airport spokesperson Sam Haynes says, “We used to say Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays are the busiest days but what we’re seeing is peak travel days are no longer really a circumstance. Every day is a busy day.”
ABIA advises travelers to allow two and half hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.
Invest in TSA PreCheck or Clear
Getting either TSA PreCheck or Clear will significantly cut down your wait time when going through security. Both options are great and will make your time at the airport less stressful.
As our forecasted record-breaking summer starts, we continue to experience airline counter and TSA delays, as we did this morning with the TSA checkpoint line. We appreciate your patience as we ask travelers to arrive at least 2.5 hours – 3 hours early.

Keep children entertained
Bringing your little ones along? Be sure to download the airport’s Austie The Flying Pup coloring and activity books. From this book, your young traveler will learn what to expect while at the airport, the dos and don’ts of air travel, and health and hygiene tips.
ABIA also has a family viewing area, perfect for your child to watch planes taking off.
The last expansion of the Austin’s TSA security checkpoint was in December 2021. There will also be a $46 million expansion plan, beginning in late 2023/early 2024.
This summer, there will be construction for a new inline Baggage Handling System. This will allow travelers to avoid having to line up by the x-ray machine to scan their baggage.
If traveling through Austin this summer, the most important thing to remember is to arrive early!
