Traveling exhibit tells story of Frida Kahlo's life through immersive experiences

Aug. 29—Frida Kahlo's life and work has become part of popular culture. The artist stood proudly as a woman in art as she carved out her own place in the world.

Her life is the focus of the traveling exhibit, "Frida Kahlo, An Immersive Biography."

"This show is really the celebration of her life," said Angela Di Corpo, the exhibit's marketing director. "It's not about her artwork. Her life story is told throughout the experience."

Albuquerque will be the next stop for the popular exhibit beginning Sept. 29, at the Immersive Pavilion, 1820 Bellamah NW, in the Sawmill District. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. Wednesday, at fridakahloabq.com.

Di Corpo said making a stop in Albuquerque was perfect in both timing and routing of the experience.

"I was out in Albuquerque during 'Beyond Van Gogh' and I noticed in Old Town, Frida was everywhere," Di Corpo said. "Albuquerque had to be the next stop for this experience."

Di Corpo said the immersive biographical exhibition of the artist features seven transformational spaces, including an award-winning virtual reality experience, enabling one to enter the life and work of the Mexican artist who, in the 21st century, continues to be more relevant than ever.

Di Corpo said while "Beyond Van Gogh" featured the paintings of the iconic artist, "Frida Kahlo: An Immersive Biography" tells Kahlo's story.

"The VR experience takes visitors into Frida's life. You'll see everything as she did," Di Corpo said. "There is an education component, as well as an immersive component. Then there's 'La Rosita,' which is a coloring room. This is where you can color and you put it on the projector and it comes to life. There's also a costume room where you can see the fashion of that time."

The experience debuted in Montreal, where it is still showing. The traveling show moves on from Phoenix before arriving in Albuquerque.

Di Corpo said the initial run date is Sept. 29 through Oct. 30, but she is expecting the run to be extended. Tickets start at $37.99 at fridakahloabq.com. There will also be discounts for students, children and families.
