Law enforcement shot and killed a 25-year-old Austin resident Thursday after responding to an attempted carjacking off East U.S. 290 that resulted in the victim of the auto theft getting stabbed, according to a press release from the Travis County sheriff's office.

Deputies with the Travis County sheriff's office and the Manor police initially responded to a 911 call at about 9 p.m. of a man walking in the middle of the road on the 10200 block of East U.S. 290. Minutes later, law enforcement received notification that the suspect, Dimitri Amarillas, attempted to steal a car and stabbed the victim in the process.

Deputies and police found Dimitri Amarillas holding a knife at about 9:25 p.m. and said he remained "non-compliant" with instructions as more officers arrived.

Minutes later, a deputy with the sheriff's office reported that a taser was used, the release said. It's unclear what happened after this, but the release said a deputy and a Manor police officer fired their weapons.

Officers attempted life-saving measures but were ultimately unsuccessful. Amarillas was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.

No other information was available at this time, a public information officer with the sheriff's office told the American-Statesman.

Both officers who shot Amarillas were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the shooting. The Texas Rangers are leading an investigation into the incident, along with parallel investigations by the Travis County sheriff's office Criminal Investigations Division and Internal Affairs.
