Tre Norwood, who is making his name in the NFL, and his aunt, Tiffany Jarrett, a former Razorback cheerleader, will host football and cheer camps at Northside High School this month.

The camps will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 24 at Mayo-Thompson Stadium, 2301 N. B Street.

Norwood is a Northside graduate who played football at the University of Oklahoma and now is in his third year with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jarrett, Norwood's aunt, is a former University of Arkansas cheerleader who also cheered at Van Buren High School and is now cheer coach at Booker T. Washington High School.

Special guests will include Green Bay Packers' cornerback Kiondre Thomas and other NFL players, including Terrell Edmunds of the Philadelphia Eagles, Tre Brown of the Seattle Seahawks and Kendrick Green of Pittsburgh Steelers.

It is a family event, with Norwood's mom, Shea Norwood, of Fort Smith coordinating the camps.

"This is our first camp and we are looking to make it an annual event," Shea Norwood said.

The family's long history of helping the community inspired the idea for a nonprofit camp, she said. Her father-in-law, the late Michael Norwood Sr., was a principal at Kimmons Junior High School. Her family has been involved in two mentoring programs, the Round Table volunteer group, which mentored the Golden Knights students at Northside, and the Jewels, a mentoring program at Kimmons and Sunnymede Elementary, Shea Norwood said.

When Tre Norwood played football at OU, the family was involved in distributing backpacks and school supplies to students.

"It's very important that we give back to the community We've always wanted to give back to help youth," Shea Norwood said.

The football camp features separate age groups for campers: kindergarten through fourth grade, fifth grad through eighth grade and ninth grade through 12th grad. The cheer camp is for ages 10-17.

A seven-on-seven exhibition football game will be at 5 p.m. at the end of the camp.
