Treasure Coast soccer teams in place for top seeds at districts after new FHSAA rankings

It’s crunch time for boys and girls soccer programs heading toward the district tournaments and the FHSAA’s latest rankings released Tuesday have the area’s best in position to be the top seeds in their respective districts.

Pine School’s boys are No. 50 overall and maintained their No. 1 ranking in 2A with a 10-0 record. They will be the top seed in District 8-2A.

South Fork is right behind the Knights at No. 61, but the Bulldogs will have to look up at Viera, who is inside the state’s top 15 overall, as well as Melbourne in District 8-6A.

Vero Beach climbed inside the state’s top 100 at No. 98 and is in position to be the top seed in District 10-7A.

For Martin County’s girls, the race for the top seed in District 8-6A will go down to the wire as the Tigers are No. 58 and just five spots behind Viera, who currently holds the No. 1 seed.

Treasure Coast is No. 91 as the only other girls team ranked inside the state’s top 100 and will likely be the No. 2 seed in District 10-7A behind Jupiter.

The final regular season games take place the rest of this week and district seeding will be determined over the weekend heading toward the start of district tournaments, which begin Wednesday, Jan. 26.

Martin County’s boys basketball team made a jump up in the newest FHSAA rankings, entering the state’s top 20 at No. 17 and are fifth in 6A, and more importantly, leapfrogged over Dwyer by one spot to currently hold the top seed in District 13-6A.

Another team continuing to rise in the rankings is Centennial, which has climbed all the way to No. 40 overall and No. 11 in 7A while currently holding the top spot in District 10-7A.

John Carroll Catholic also sits inside the state’s top 100 at No. 97.

On the girls’ side, Vero Beach continues to lead the way at No. 31 overall and check in at No. 6 in 7A while holding the top seed in District 10-7A.

Okeechobee is not far behind at No. 49 and the Brahmans are also No. 6 in their classification in 5A, holding the top seed in District 13-5A.

Centennial comes in at No. 90 as the only other girls’ team ranked inside the state’s top 100.

Teams will play games until Saturday, Jan. 29, with that date being the cutoff for games to be included in the rankings. Those results will determine the seedings for the district tournament, which will be played beginning the week of Feb. 7.

Wednesday's scores

Lincoln Park Academy 55, Fort Pierce Westwood 53: Olivia Titherington and Sophia Marrero each scored 14 points as the Greyhounds (11-5) fought off the Panthers. Janiah Gardner added 10 points for Lincoln Park.

Shakeria Briggs hit five 3-pointers and scored 15 points for Fort Pierce Westwood.

Sebastian River 55, South Fork 33: Ariyah Brown filled thee stat sheet with 18 points, eight rebounds, six steals and blocked three shots to lead the way for the Sharks (8-6). Isabella Bowen scored 16 points and Jayda Pickard added seven points for Sebastian River.
