🌱Riverboat Sank Near Island White + Parapet St. Sets Décor Trend

Up and at 'em, Long Beach! It's Thursday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in town.

A couple of trees fell Tuesday; there were no injuries. Also, lighted archways are all the rage this year, and they might be a new local tradition. Finally, the Newport Princess riverboat sank off Island White.

Here’s your gas update: it’s cheapest at Sam’s Club, 7480 Carson Street, with $4.09 a gallon.

First, today's weather:

Some sun, then clouds; cool. High: 57 Low: 45.

Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Rainfall combined with winds results in downed trees, and Tuesday was no exception. A little after 8:30 a.m., a 50-foot tree went down at East 69th Way and Orcutt Avenue, falling on two vehicles in the process. Another tree went down a half hour later at 1330 Belmont Avenue. This one fell on a house, “causing slight damage.” There are no reports of injuries. (KTLA)

  2. Neither COVID nor rainfall can dampen LB’s enjoyment of holiday decorations. And this year, lighted archways are a new decorating trend that has taken the city by storm. Check out the sidewalk of the 6700 block of Parapet Street, and you know what we mean. In the past, only a few houses would have these arches; this year, neighbors are connecting their decor to create beautiful sights in neighborhoods across LB. (Spectrum News 1)

  3. On Tuesday, the three-story riverboat named the Newport Princess sank near Island White, which is an oil platform camouflaged with palm trees just two miles off the beach. There were no injuries, but passersby saw plenty of debris wash ashore. Many residents know this 61-foot boat as a popular party and events venue. (CBS)

  4. During the height of the rainstorm on Tuesday, Los Angeles officials alerted the LBFD that cars were washed into the L.A. River and heading downstream to LB. On Wednesday, the water in the human-made river had gone down sufficiently for rescue crews to search for two vehicles. They entered the water near Wardlow Road and were able to confirm that nobody was inside. Once the water recedes a little more, the FD will pull out the cars. (LB News)

  5. The LB City Health Officer warns residents to stay out of the water. Because of the runoff flowing into the ocean from storm drains, bacterial levels increase, which creates an unhealthy environment. She suggests that “recreational swimming areas should be avoided for three days following the end of a rainstorm.” (City of LB)
