Tremé housefire leaves three dogs dead, four people displaced

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Fire Department was on the scene of a fatal housefire in the Tremé area on Thursday, Feb. 1 that left four people without a home.

According to firefighters, they received a call around 8:02 a.m. reporting a fire in the 2600 block of Ursuline Avenue.

The first truck arrived at 8:07 a.m. to find a two-unit home with heavy smoke coming from the back right side of it.

Firefighters were notified that a man living in the basement and his dog escaped safely, as well as three residents in the upper units, but three dogs were still inside.

NOFD officials worked to reach the dogs but said they were all found unresponsive. They tried to resuscitate them but were unsuccessful.

Eight fire trucks carrying 25 responders were able to get the flames under control by 8:25 a.m.

Three adults and a child were displaced due to the fire. There were no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is unknown. The investigation remains ongoing.
