Unsure where San Jose's insiders are eating and drinking? It's easy to spot lines out the door, but some underlying trends are harder to see.

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to uncover which restaurants have been getting a notable uptick in attention this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at San Jose businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Read on to see which spots are on a hot streak, right now.

Demiya

Open since February 2020, this Japanese spot is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "Japanese" on Yelp.

Citywide, Japanese spots saw a median 1% increase in new reviews over the past month. Demiya only recently appeared on Yelp, but while many new businesses struggle to gain reviews, it has seen strong initial popularity.

It's not the only trending outlier in the Japanese category: TD’s Kitchen has seen a 44.4% increase in reviews, and Hapa Musubi and Sizzling Lunch have seen 42.2 and 11.3% increases, respectively.

Located at 1145 S. De Anza Blvd., Demiya offers an assortment of curries, as well as Japanese udon noodles, salad bowls, tamago-toji (egg drop soup) and teishoku (bento boxes served with edamame, salad, white rice and miso soup).

Milk Tea Lab

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about Cambrian Park's Milk Tea Lab, the popular spot to score bubble tea and smoothies is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While businesses categorized as "Bubble Tea" on Yelp saw a median 1.6% increase in new reviews over the past month, Milk Tea Lab bagged a 21.9% increase in new reviews within that time frame, maintaining a healthy 4.5-star rating. It significantly outperformed the previous month by gaining 2.5 times more reviews than expected based on its past performance.

There's more that's trending on San Jose's bubble tea scene: Kokonut Desserts has seen a 10.2% increase in reviews.

Open at 1601 Branham Lane, Spc 3 since August 2019, Milk Tea Lab offers customers the experience to craft their own bubble teas — choose a base (jasmine, oolong or black tea), before adding three toppings and cooking it to your desired palette, adding milk and sugar until the flavor's just right. The eatery also features a variety of Asian board games.

Milk Tea Lab is open from noon–midnight daily.

Tostadas

Downtown San Jose's Tostadas is also making waves. Open since June 2019 at 304 E. Santa Clara St., Suite A, the well-established Mexican and breakfast and brunch spot has seen an 11% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1% for all businesses tagged "Breakfast & Brunch" on Yelp.

There's more than one hot spot trending in San Jose's breakfast and brunch category: Voyager Craft Coffee has seen a 7.6% increase in reviews, and The Original Pancake House has seen a 0.6% bump.

Tostada's Mexican-American breakfast menu includes a Mexican omelet with jalapenos, tomatoes, onions and Jack Cheese; red or green chilaquiles topped with two eggs, sour cream, queso fresco and pico de gallo; and stuffed poblano chile. Over the past month, it's maintained a strong four-star rating among Yelpers.

Tostadas is open from 7 a.m.–9 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and 7 a.m.–10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Ozumo Santana Row

Winchester North's Ozumo Santana Row is the city's buzziest sushi bar by the numbers.

The popular izakaya, sushi bar and bar, which opened at 355 Santana Row, Suite 1010 in May 2018, increased its new review count by 8.8% over the past month, an outlier when compared to the median new review count of 1% for the Yelp category "Sushi Bars."

It's not the only trending outlier in the sushi bar category: Sushi Kan has seen a 5.7% increase in reviews, and El Camaron De Sinaloa has seen a 1.4% bump.

Ozumo Santana Row features a Japanese beer garden, as well as a lineup of sashimi and nigiri sushi and a variety of seafood and meat-centric dishes.

Ozumo Santana Row is open from 3:30 p.m.–9 p.m. on Monday, 3:30 p.m.–10 p.m. on Tuesday-Thursday, 3:30 p.m.–11:30 p.m. on Friday, 11:30 a.m.–11:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m. on Sunday.
