‘Trespasser’ killed after being struck by Washington D.C. Metro train

A person was killed Tuesday after being struck by a Washington D.C. commuter train.

The incident occurred on the Metro Red Line around 5:15 p.m., when the person was hit between the Brookland and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood stations in the capital’s Northeast section, according to DC News Now.

Service on the line was suspended and the train’s 115 passengers were evacuated by firefighters. There were no injuries reported among the passengers.

“We ask for our customers’ patience as we continue to increase bus shuttle support during rush hour,” Metro General Manager Randy Clarke tweeted.

DC Fire and EMS described their response as “sadly, a recovery rather than a rescue” in a follow-up tweet at roughly 5:45 p.m.

“Unfortunately, the individual struck is not showing signs of life and this is a recovery operation,” the Metro Transit Police clarified around 6 p.m.

Local ABC affiliate WJLA described the person as a “trespasser.”

There was no indication how long service would be suspended or how long delays would last.

Service on the Red Line was suspended for more than three hours in April after a man touched the electrified third rail and was hit by a train.
