Trey Braithwaite drafted by Reds in 16th round
Jul. 20—MORGANTOWN — West Virginia closer Trey Braithwaite became the third Mountaineers player to be drafted in baseball amateur draft on Tuesday.
The Winchester, Va. native was taken in the 16th round (No. 483 overall) by the Cincinnati Reds.
Pitcher Jacob Watters and outfielder Victor Scott II were previously drafted on Monday.
Also on Tuesday, incoming freshman right-hander Gavin Van Kempen was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round. Van Kempen now has the choice to turn pro or enroll at WVU.
If he chooses to go to college, he wouldn't be eligible again for the draft until 2025.
Braithwaite, a fifth-year transfer from Navy, went 3-0 with a 1.70 ERA for the Mountaineers this season. He had eight saves and struck out 36 in 37 innings pitched.
He currently pitches for the West Virginia Black Bears. In 14 games for the Black Bears, he has five saves with a 1.29 ERA. Braithwaite, an all-Big 12 first-team selection this season, has struck out 26 over 14 innings.
