Trey Sherwood exits Valdosta Board of Education after serving 18 years

Dec. 14—VALDOSTA — Trey Sherwood, who has served on the Valdosta City Schools Board of Education since January of 2006, was celebrated in his final meeting of his third term Tuesday evening.

Sherwood's impact and contribution to the board were recognized during a brief celebration prior to and during the evening's regular session.

Public Relations Director Jennifer Steedley read remarks on Sherwood's departure. She said, "Since January 2006 he's spent many Mondays, and now Tuesday nights supporting the work of our superintendent and school district, but I would venture to say that two of his proudest moments serving in this role were when he had the pleasure of presenting his daughters with their Valdosta High School diplomas."

He has seen the rebuild of the following campuses: Pinevale Elementary School, W.G. Nunn Elementary School, S.L. Mason Elementary School and Valdosta High School.

He also saw the addition of athletic facilities and classrooms on the campus of J.L Newbern Middle School, the addition of the STEM Academy building at Valdosta Middle School and continued success of the Valdosta Early College Academy.

Steedley said he's worked with five superintendents, numerous assistant superintendents, principals and directors and 22 different members on the VCS Board of Education.

Superintendent Dr. Craig Lockhart and Chairwoman Tyra Howard presented a plaque to Sherwood for his 18 years of service in the District 5 seat. Lockhart read a quote from the plaque stating, "You make a living by what you get but you make a life by what you give."

"Just thank you, number one, to my family and to you, all the other [past] superintendents and board members. Continue to carry the torch. I'm proud of this school system. I'm proud of what it's done for our community, especially my family and my brother's family. I just thank y'all and I'll miss you," Sherwood said to the attendees while fighting tears.

Board members Warren Lee of District 3 and Dr. Tad Moseley of District 6 also shared remarks.

Sherwood is a graduate of Valdosta High School and Valdosta State University. He is employed with Valdosta Insurance Services and has been in the insurance profession since 1992, according to the VCS website. Sherwood obtained and has maintained the Certified Insurance Counselors Designation since 1999. In addition, he has served as chairman of the Independent Insurance Agents of Georgia's Young Agents Committee.

He and his wife Leslie have two daughters, Abbie and Julia, both graduates of VHS.
