Tri-County Times sports round-up: Collins-Maxwell wins ISC girls track championship

Collins-Maxwell won the girls team championship at the Iowa Star Conference co-ed meet May 5 at Baxter.

Ballard took fourth at two tournaments in boys golf and the Bomber boys tennis team picked up two victories during the week. Ballard and Central Iowa United also split in two soccer games, with Ballard winning the girls game and CIU taking the boys contest during a busy week for the two area schools.

The Spartan girls blew away the rest of the field at the ISC track meet. They won eight events in scoring 164 points to beat North Tama by 68 points for the conference championship.

"Tonight's win was just a perfect meet for our girls," Collins-Maxwell head coach Jerry Meinerts said. "I'm so proud of their determination, effort, and dedication to the sport."

It was the third conference title in a row for Collins-Maxwell. The only time the Spartan girls missed out on a conference title over the last four years was the 2020 season that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alexis Houge won the 100 and 200-meter dash events, took second in the 400 and helped Collins-Maxwell win the 4x100 relay. Mary Staudt added wins in both the discus and shot put and Marissa Boege and Chloe Wierson helped the Spartans sweep the hurdle events.

Houge clocked in at 12.98 seconds in the 100, 27.49 in the 200 and 1:02.52 in the 400. She was joined by Boege, Wierson and Avery Fricke in winning the 4x100 in 52.84.

Boege won the 100 hurdles in 17:32 and Wierson took first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:11.83. Boege was joined by Fricke, Gracie Leslie and Hannah Kimberly in running a winning time of 1:15.27 in the shuttle hurdle.

Staudt won the discus with a throw of 105 feet, 2 inches and the shot put with a toss of 32-6.

Fricke took second to Houge in the 100 with a 13.29 showing and she was runner-up to Boege in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17:51. Erica Houge won a silver medal in the high jump with a jump of 4-8, Tori Bienfang picked up a bronze in the long jump with a distance of 14-5.5 and Wierson was third in the open 400 with a time of 1:05.50.

The Collins-Maxwell 4x800 team of Karley Ruiz-Genovese, Ella Steward, Kenzi Wierson and Emma Pasquariello placed third in 11:47.87 and the Spartan sprint medley team of Boege, Jade Tyler, Erica Houge and Chloe Wierson also won bronze in 2:02.64.

Spartan boys place second

The Collins-Maxwell boys track team took second at the ISC meet with 123.5 points. Baxter won the conference title with a score of 136.5.

Luke Huntrods won the boys discus with a throw of 151-0.5. He easily beat the runner-up throw of 133-9 by Don Bosco's Mack Ortner.

Lane Oswalt gave the Spartan boys a gold medal in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.92. He beat the 1:00.77 by North Tama's Gabe Kopriva for first.

Oswalt was joined by Parker Lawrence, Isaac Brown and Brody Sampson in running a runner-up time of 47.07 in the 4x100. Tripoli won in 44.56.

Nate Smith, Caleb Dvorak, Kayden McKinney and Ethan Haus placed third in the distance medley with a time of 4:05.50. Haus took second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:02.19 and he was third in both the 800 and 3,200 with respective times of 2:13.21 and 10:57.06.

Sampson took third in the high jump with a 5-6 effort and the shot put with a toss of 43-6.5. The Collins-Maxwell 4x800 team of Hunter Lee, William Booth, Isaiah Hill and Josh Sievert won bronze in 9:36.14.

Paityn Noe wins girls 3,000 at RRC meet

Ballard's Paityn Noe won the girls 3,000 and was a close second to defending Class 3A state champion Ainsley Erzen of Carlisle in the 1,500 during the Raccoon River Conference co-ed track meet May 5 at Alleman.

Noe completed the 3,000 in 10:12.62. She beat Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Geneva Timmermann by over 40 seconds for the victory.

Noe ran a 4:44.97 in the 1,500. Erzen won in 4:41.87.

The Bomber 4x800 team of Kate Huisinga, Ava Richardson, Mya Ehresman and Annika Larson placed third in 10:33.79. Noe was joined by Noelle Boettger, Kate Miller and Katie Tollefson in running a fourth-place time of 4:29.98 in the distance medley.

The Ballard girls placed eighth as a team at the RRC meet with 45 points. ADM won with a score of 167.5.

On the boys side Ballard took ninth with 24 points. North Polk won with a score of 206 and ADM placed second with 173 points.

Jameson Witt was fourth in the boys 400 for the Ballard boys with a time of 52.46. Jayden Swain was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 19-2.75 and Eli Rouse took sixth in the 200 with a 23.26 showing.

Ballard boys golf places fourth at two tournaments

The Ballard boys golf team placed fourth at the Gilbert Invitational Saturday at the Ames Golf and Country Club and the Webster City Invitational May 5 at the Briggs Woods Invitational.

Both meets went 18 holes. Ballard shot a 325 at the Gilbert Invite and a 343 at Webster City.

Brady Kruger carded a 75 to tie for fourth individually as Ballard's top golfer at the Gilbert Invite. Mason Gatchel and Brenden Wright each shot an 83 to tie for 20th place and Spencer Salasek tied for 23rd with an 84,

At Webster City Jay Voss placed 10th with an 82 and Kruger 11th with an 83 to lead Ballard. Gatchel took 20th with an 88 and Wright tied for 24th with a 90.

The Bombers also came in seventh at the Trojan Invitational in Atlantic May 3 with a score of 339. Gatchel and Voss tied for 18th with an 83, Blake Fleischmann tied for 28th with an 85 and Andrew Princehouse was 33rd with an 88.

The Ballard girls took third at a triangular dual in Jewell May 3. The Bombers shot a 216 over nine holes to come in behind West Marshall's 206 and South Hamilton's 209.

Alliyah Thompson led Ballard with a fifth-place score of 49. Maddie Kielsmeier tied for sixth with a 52, Aubrey Estrem placed 11th with a 57 and Chastyn Gering 12th with a 58.

Ballard boys get two wins, girls top South Hardin in tennis

The Ballard boys tennis team closed out the regular season with victories at Newton (8-1) May 5 and at home versus Indianola (7-4) May 3.

The Bombers received singles victories against Indianola from Jacob Ross, Jayden Cattell, Grant Anderson and Colby Calvert in the Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 matches. Ross and Cattell won the No. 1 doubles match, Calvert and Caden Miller took the No. 3 match and Rylan Culp and Tristan Preston won the No. 4 match.

Results were not available for the Newton match at press deadline.

The Ballard girls scored an 8-1 victory over South Hardin Monday.

Kaitlyn Zugay, Meghan Young, Kiley Calvert, Gracie Ross and Danique Jonkman won the Nos. 2 through 6 singles matches for the Ballard girls. In doubles play Ross and Regen Halsne won the No. 1 match, Zugay and Young took the No. 2 match and Calvert and Ellie Volkmann came out on top in the No. 3 match.

The Bomber girls also suffered a 6-5 loss to Boone May 5 at McHose Park in Boone.

Halsne and Zugay won the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches in straight sets against the Toreadors. Calvert and Volkmann won the No. 3 doubles match, Jocie Hobbs and Jonkman took the No. 4 match and Vanessa Nop and Memphis Inglett were victorious in the No. 5 match.

Ballard and CIU split in girls and boys soccer

The Ballard girls soccer team earned a 9-1 victory over Central Iowa United May 5 at Huxley.

The Bombers led 6-0 at the half and coasted over the final 40 minutes to improve to 6-4 on the season. CIU fell to 3-7.

Statistics were not available for the game at press time.

The CIU boys pulled off a 4-2 victory over Ballard May 5 at State Center. CIU improved to 1-7 and Ballard dropped to 1-9.

Wade Weave scored 2 goals and Ben Richardson and Austin Lane 1 apiece for CIU. Ephram Muntz added 2 assists and keeper Tanner Scroggins had 18 saves for CIU.
