Tri-County Times sports round-up: Paityn Noe wins girls 3,000 at Drake Relays

Paityn Noe gave Ballard a Drake Relays winner in the girls 3,000-meter run for the second year in a row and Collins-Maxwell's 4x100 girls relay team also competed on the blue oval last week in Des Moines.

The Collins-Maxwell girls track team also won the Meskwaki Invitational Monday and the Spartan boys placed third at Eldora Friday. The Ballard boys track team placed fourth at Roland-Story and the Bomber girls took second at the Dave Tapps Invitational in Van Meter.

The Ballard boys golf team defeated North Polk and Van Meter in a triangular and the Bomber girls took second at the Woodward-Granger Invitational. The Ballard boys tennis team scored a 9-0 win over Iowa Falls-Alden on senior night and lost a 6-5 battle to Boone and the Bomber girls scored an 8-1 win over Saydel and won the Grinnell Invitational with 142 points.

The Ballard girls soccer team defeated Panorama, 6-2, April 26 and hammered Humboldt on senior night Friday, 10-0, to improve its record to 4-3. The Central Iowa United girls scored a 6-0 win over Des Moines North April 25 then lost to Hudson (3-2) and Southeast Polk (4-0) in going to 3-6.

The CIU boys suffered losses to Van Meter (4-0), Nevada (6-0) and Pella Christian (3-0) in falling to 0-7 on the season.

Paityn Noe is brilliant at Drake

Noe kept the girls 3,000 title at Ballard and Ames had one athlete place in the top 10 at the Drake Relays April 28 in Des Moines.

Noe's former teammate, Shewaye Johnson, now running for Prosper High in Texas, won last year's 3,000 at Drake with a time of 9:46.88. Noe fell just a little shy of that mark Thursday with her winning time of 9:53.31.

"I was crossing the line and I heard them say Shewaye won it last year and I was winning it this year," Noe said. "It feels pretty awesome. I'll definitely have to call her."

Noe couldn't compete at Drake last year due to a stress fracture. She was grateful for the opportunity to finally compete at the prestigious meet.

"I worked really hard this year to get to where I am now," Noe said. "I was really happy I was able to go out show what I was capable of."

Noe led most of the race. But she received a strong push from Valley's Addison Dorenkamp.

"I was just trying to stay with Paityn because she's such a great runner," Dorenkamp said. "It was really fun to race against people I normally don't get to race against. She's such a great runner it helped push me."

Dorenkamp clocked in at 9:56.91. She won the Class 4A state championship in cross country last fall and Noe was the Class 3A champion.

On Saturday Noe competed in the girls 1,500. She was looking to challenge Carlisle's Ainsley Erzen and Dorenkamp for first in the event.

But she got tripped up shortly after the race started.

“That’s never happened to me before in a race,” Noe said. “The first 200 I fell down and got a little scrapped up, but I got back up and kept running. There wasn’t much else I could do.”

When she got back up Noe found herself in last place. She rebounded to chase down four runners and nearly caught two more before finishing 17th in 4:52.67.

“It wasn’t the race I wanted, but it just happens sometimes,” Noe said. “You’ve got to keep going.”

Noe will settle for her 3,000 title and a chance for redemption at state in a few weeks.

“I’m definitely happy with how this experience turned out,” Noe said. “Now it’s just getting ready for state.”

The Ballard girls scored 97 points Dave Tapps Invitational April 28.

Kate Huisinga won the 800 in 2:30.46, Annika Larson claimed the 1,500 title in 5:06.54 and Ava Vance took first in the 3,000 with an 11:56.80 showing. Kate Tollefson was second in the 200 for Ballard with a time of 28.91 and Ava Richardson was runner-up in the open 400 with a 1:07.28 showing.

Chelsea Gadbaw also took second in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet, 1.5 inches. Ballard's top relay was the 4x800, where Huisinga, Mya Ehresman, Richardson and Larson finished second in 10:39.93.

The Ballard boys scored 83.5 points at Roland-Story April 28.

Wol Wol won the high jump with a jump of 5-8. Jameson Witt was runner-up in the open 400 with a time of 52.64 and Eli Rouse was second in the 200 with a 24.21 showing.

Seth Pencook took second in the 3,200 after clocking in at 11:02.78. Ballard's sprint medley team of Eric Sydnes, Blake Stover, Chance Lande and Witt placed second in 1:39.40 and Lande, Jakson Fleischmann, Rouse and Witt won silver in the 4x400 with a time of 3:39.17.

C-M girls 4x100 place 65th at Drake

The Collins-Maxwell girls 4x100 team of Marissa Boege, Chloe Wierson, Avery Fricke and Alexis Houge ran a time of 52.09 to place 65th during the prelims of the Drake Relays Saturday.

The Collins-Maxwell girls won the Meskwaki Invitational Monday with 186 points. The Spartans won seven events during the meet.

Houge won the 100 in 13.46. The race actually covered 110 meters as it was started on the wrong line.

Houge also won the open 400 in 1:04.93 and was second in the 200 with a time of 26.97. Boege, Wierson, Fricke and Houge won the 4x100 in 53.31 and Boege and Fricke were joined by Graice Leslie and Ashlyn Davis in winning the shuttle hurdle with a time of 1:16.94.

Mary Staudt won both the shot put and discus with respective throws of 33-6 and 98-1. Erica Houge won the high jump after clearing 4-6.

Wierson was also second in the open 400 with a 1:05.77 showing, Fricke won silver in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.79 and Hannah Kimberly was runner-up in the 400 hurdles after finishing in 1:18.36.

Boege, Leslie, Sarah Tschantz and Erica Houge were runner-up in the 4x200 with a 2:00.83 showing. Boege, Erica Houge, Fricke and Wierson took second in the sprint medley with a time of 2:01.12 and Kimberly, Erica Houge, Karley Ruiz-Genovese and Emma Pasquariello were runner-up in the 4x400 with a time of 4:49.55.

The Collins-Maxwell boys scored 111 points at the South Hardin Invitational Friday.

Ethan Haus won the 800 in 2:15.18 and took second in both the 1,600 and 3,200 with respective times of 5:23.10 and 11:05 flat. Lane Oswalt won the 400 hurdles in 1:01.04 and Luke Huntrods placed first in the discus with a throw of 137-4.

Ballard boys shoot a 167 at NP triangular

The Ballard boys shot a 167 over nine holes to defeat North Polk by three strokes and Van Meter by 17 at the Tournament Club of Iowa Monday.

Freshman Mason Gatchel shot a 37 to win medalist and Andrew Princehouse came in third with a 42. Jacob Ihle tied for fourth with a 43 and Brady Kruger tied for seventh with a 45.

The Ballard girls shot a 211 at its home triangular the Ballard Golf and Country Club Monday. Roland-Story won with a 189 and North Polk carded a 227.

Aubrey Estrem placed fourth with a 49 and Maddie Kielsmeier was fifth with a 52 to lead the Bomber girls. Alliyah Thompson and Chastyn Gering tied for seventh with a 55.

The Bomber girls placed second out of six teams at the Woodward-Granger Invitational April 28 at the Woodward Golf Club with an 18-hole score of 445. Adel-Desoto-Minburn won with a 406.

Thompson paced fourth individually at Woodward with a 103. Estrem tied for 13th with a 112, Kielsmeier tied for 15th with a 113 and Gering tied for 19th with a 117.

Bomber boys fall just short versus Boone

The Ballard boys tennis team suffered a 6-5 loss at the hands of Boone April 26 at McHose Park in Boone.

Jacob Ross, Jayden Cattell, Caden Miller and Grant Anderson gave Ballard victories in the Nos. 2-5 singles matches. But the Bombers struggled in doubles play, with Mill and Colby Calvert picking up their only win in the No. 3 match.

Ballard blanked IFA at home April 25, 9-0.

Peyton Elliott, Grant Anderson, Garrett Anderson, Zack Charter, Dawson Brekke and Jaron Watson all won in singles play against the Cadets. Ross and Cattell won the No. 1 doubles match, Miller and Calvert claimed victory in the No. 2 match and Rylan Culp and Tristan Preston won the No. 3 match.

The Ballard girls scored an 8-1 win over Saydel at home April 26.

Regen Halsne, Kaitlyn Zugay, Meghan Young, Kiley Calvert, Gracie Ross and Danique Jonkman all won in singles play for the Bomber girls. Zugay and Young also won the No. 2 doubles match and Calvert and Ellie Volkmann took the No. 3 match.

The Ballard girls won the Grinnell Invitational April 25 with 142 points.

Zugay was 2-0 and Young 1-1 in singles play at Grinnell. Halsne and Ross, Volkmann and Jonkman and Vanessa Nop and Memphis Inglett were all 2-0 in doubles play and Kiley Calvert and Jocie Hobbs were 1-1.

Ballard goes to 4-3 in girls soccer

The decisive win over Humboldt and the victory over Panorama put the Ballard girls soccer team at 4-3 on the season.

Michaela Morgan had 3 goals and 1 assist and Brooke Loewe also scored a hat-trick with 3 goals for Ballard in the win over Humboldt Friday on senior night in Huxley. Ellis Giles scored 2 goals, Morgan Catron and Lily Beall each scored 1 goal and Sarah Hartman had 1 save.

In the victory over Panorama Giles and Loewe both netted 2 goals and Megan Rowedder and Michaela Morgan each scored 1. Meg Rietz added 1 assist and Maddie Catron made 2 saves.

CIU girls top DM North in soccer

The Central Iowa United girls soccer team picked up a 6-0 victory over Des Moines North April 25 in State Center.

Tori Bienfang and Grace Tollefson each scored 2 goals, Lillie Vansice had 1 goal and assist apiece and Izabell Voelker scored 1 goal.

In the loss to Hudson CIU received 1 goal apiece from Bienfang and Vansice and Voelker handed out an assist. Cassidy Smith had 5 saves against both Hudson and the loss to Southeast Polk.

Tanner Scroggins had 15 saves against Nevada and 10 in the loss to Van Meter.
