ZANESVILLE — Cam West led Muskingum Valley to a win in the all-star game in 2008 as the quarterback.

The Tri-Valley alum will now walk the sidelines for the 40th annual all-star showdown as Muskingum Valley welcomes Licking County to Tri-Valley's Jack Anderson Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday, June 17.

Gates open at 6 p.m. that night. All tickets are $5 and must be purchased at the gate.

"There's a lot of pride in our area and the surrounding counties about playing good football," West said. "It's hard to believe 14 years ago I was playing, and now I get to lead the charge. It means a lot to have this chance."

West and members of his Tri-Valley staff will be joined by West Muskingum coach Nate Brownrigg and members of his staff, while Granville's Wes Schroeder will lead the Licking County squad.

Muskingum Valley will have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. The roster features Tri-Valley's Drew Burkhart (QB-DB), Jalen Goins-Chandler (WR-DB), Alex Williams (WR-DB) and Jacob Kinder (OL-DL) and West Muskingum's Harley Hopkins (QB-LB), Thomas Ervin (OL-DL) and Cyler Young (OL-DL).

The rest of the roster includes John Glenn's Blade Barclay (WR-DB), Noah Wellmeier (RB-OLB) and Tuff Zemba (OL-DL); Sheridan's Jason Munyan (RB), Holden Bowen (OL-DL) and Mason Morrison (OL-DL); Zanesville's Trey Whiteman (FB-LB), Jordan Martin (RB-DB), Joey Brown (OL-DL), Kanye Evans (OL-DL) and Michael Norman (WR-DB); Meadowbrook's Josh Hupp (QB-OLB); New Lexington's Hunter Kellogg (QB-TE-LB); Coshocton's Korbyn Haley (RB-LB), Isaac Shook (TE-RB-LB) and Kobe Rust (WR-DB); Morgan's Jarrell Hill (OL-DL) and Zane Lloyd (OL-DL); Crooksville's Ethan Sprankle (WR-DB) and Austin Love (WR-DB); Philo's Owen Smith (QB-DB), Jaxson Radcliffe (WR-DB), Caden Swingle (OL-DL) and Steel Hambel (OL-DL) and Maysville's Garrett LaFollette (OL-DL) and Nate Harper (WR-DB).

West likes the mix of athletes, especially at quarterback with Burkhart, Hopkins, Hupp and Smith likely sharing snaps.

He also noted the team will only practice the week of the game to preserve them physically.

"We have a pretty diverse group and a lot of explosive playmakers," West said. "We need to keep things simple, but also have smart, efficient practices. We know what we want to implement so it's making sure we use our time wisely."

Another addition is the Muskingum Valley MVP award is now named after long-time Sheridan coach Paul Culver Jr., who passed away earlier this year. West played against him as a Scottie and believes this is a great way to honor the legendary coach.

The Licking County MVP award will have the name of Paul "Hoss" Starr of Newark.

"It's a great thing to do and well deserved. He's a legend in my book and a coach to look up to," West said. "He not only changed the culture of the football program, but the culture of the school at Sheridan. RMA (Right Mental Attitude) is repeated in all their sports programs, and you know someone is special when they affect a whole community like he did."

Licking County's rosters includes Newark Catholic All-Ohioan Cole Canter at quarterback, along with Johnstown's Joe Sahr. The local stars can also line up with All-Ohioans Devon Haley of Granville and Northridge's J.D. Miller in the backfield, teaming with fleet-footed Jaleel Sales of Watkins Memorial.

Among receivers, Licking has Heath's Reece Huber, Caleb Wheeler of Watkins Memorial, Jacob Climer from Licking Heights and Utica's Brock Wygle as targets.

The line looks strong with the likes of Heath's Gavin Postelwaite and Austin Snedeker, Granville's Bobby Vahalik, Mason Liberti and Austin Roberts and Newark's K'Mar Davis.

Linebacking figures to be a strength with NC All-Ohioan Elijah Wallace, Newark's Orryan Whitner and Riley Gould of Heath, while Lakewood's Brandon Allen, Matt Kirk of Newark Catholic and Heath's Mitchell McClain highlight the secondary.
