Trial of alleged Hebdo attack accomplices begins

Security officers wearing balaclavas and bullet-proof vests took up positions inside and outside the court on Wednesday (September 2) while a convoy of vehicles were seen bringing defendants to the location.

Longtime lawyer for Charlie Hebdo, Richard Malka, who called one of the assassinated cartoonists Charb as his best friend, said the trial was above all about protecting the freedom of expression.

"The spirit of Charlie Hebdo is this: to refuse giving up our freedoms, giving up laughter, giving up the freedom to criticize," Malka told journalists.
