Trial for man Pineville accused in over two dozen rapes moved to January

An Abbeville man wanted on warrants in two parishes led Rapides Parish Sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase on Interstate 49 Saturday morning.

The trial of a Pineville man accused in more than two dozen rapes from decades ago was delayed Wednesday.

Harvey Joseph Fountain, 75, was to have gone to trial on charges of first-degree rape on Oct. 10, but his attorney asked 9th Judicial District Court Judge Greg Beard for a delay.

Rapides Parish Assistant District Attorney Len Hall said he agreed with the continuance. Hall replaces Christopher Bowman, who left the Rapides District Attorney’s Office last month for a position in Caddo Parish.

Beard set the new trial date for Jan. 23.

Fountain’s attorney, John R. Flynn Jr., told Beard the case may be resolved before that date. He said there are no motions to be taken up before trial.

Fountain was arrested by the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office twice in April 2019, each time on 50 counts of first-degree rape. He was indicted on 26 counts of first-degree rape in June 2019.

At the time of his arrests, authorities alleged the rapes happened at Pineville homes where Fountain lived during the 1970s and 80s.

During a March hearing, Flynn said he understood the indictment would be amended to try Fountain on two counts of first-degree rape. While Bowman agreed, online Rapides Parish Clerk of Court records do not reflect that the indictment was amended.
