It’s the day Deric Davis’ family has been waiting for since detectives recovered his body back in 2020. They were in court today for the first day of Janet Winbush’s non-jury trial.

“It hurts that she’s still walking around, but I have to go to Allegheny Cemetery to see my brother,” Stacey Davis, Deric’s sister, said.

When Stacey Davis saw Winbush in court today, she was flooded with emotions.

“The anger came back. And everything. All the anger. It was senseless,” she said.

According to police, Winbush tried to hide the garbage bags under a deflated air mattress outside their duplex.

“She threw him out like a bag of garbage. She was cruel, evil, and just one bad person,” Deric’s father, Joseph Davis said.

Joseph testified about the kind of person his son was. It brought back how much he missed his son.

“I miss the phone calls and everything. It’s been a long time,” he added.

Deric was missing for two weeks before his body was finally found. During that time, police say Winbush pretended to help search for her husband and even made calls to hospitals looking for him.

The family is hoping she gets sentenced to life in prison.

“Sit there and rot. The way you threw my brother out like a piece of garbage, you sit there in the jail cell and rot the same way,” Stacey said.
