Triangle Prep Football Central: Friday’s previews, schedules, standings

(News & Observer’s Sweet 16 rankings included)

Apex (0-5, 0-5 South Wake Athletic 4A) at South Garner (0-6, 0-5), 6:30 p.m. – It’s a “feel-good” game for one of these winless teams. Apex QB Max Bartelt and WR Carter Oddo are having solid seasons. South Garner freshman DB James Johnson has caused three fumbles this season.

No. 4 Apex Friendship (6-0, 5-0 South Wake Athletic 4A) at Garner (3-3, 3-2), 6:30 p.m. – The visiting Patriots aim to cap a perfect regular season. Their defense has allowed only 42 points in five conference games. But they’re facing a Garner team that has won three in a row, with RB Markyell Royster averaging nearly 150 rushing yards a contest.

Broughton (2-4, 2-3 CAP 7 4A) at No. 14 Millbrook (4-2, 4-1), 6:30 p.m. – A playoff berth awaits Millbrook if it can handle the Caps. Broughton has been susceptible to the pass this season, and Millbrook QB Ford Spainhour is averaging 212 yards in the air per game.

Cary (2-3, 2-3 Triangle 4A) at Athens Drive (3-3, 3-3), 6:30 p.m. – Don’t look for a lot of points in this game between two teams near the middle of the conference standings. These are teams with solid defenses but erratic offenses.

East Wake (1-4, 1-3 Greater Neuse 3A) at Smithfield-Selma (2-4, 0-4), 6:30 p.m. – The visiting Warriors’ hopes of finishing the season with two straight victories might rest with stopping Spartans’ RB Clevonte Watson, who has rushed for 659 yards this season.

No. 11 Hillside (4-1, 4-1 Triangle 4A) at Green Level (1-3, 1-3), 7 p.m. – The Hornets can wrap up a playoff berth with a victory at Green Level. Senior QB Aden Beatty is completing nearly 65 percent of his passes for Hillside.

Jordan (2-4, 2-4 Triangle 4A) at Green Hope (3-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. – Green Hope is another team with realistic playoff hopes. The Falcons have allowed only one touchdown in their last two games, but they haven’t played in two weeks.

No. 15 Leesville Road (4-2) at No. 16 Holly Springs (4-2), 7 p.m. – A pair of teams resting in third place in their conferences and potentially seeking a wild-card playoff berth meet in what could be a big game. Holly Springs’ defense, which started the season impressively, has been shaky in recent weeks. WR’s Nasir Winston and L.J. Lennon give Leesville Road one of the area’s top receiving duos.

No. 5 Panther Creek (5-0, 5-0 Triangle 4A) at Riverside (0-5, 0-5), 6:30 p.m. – Panther Creek QB Amari Odom, who threw for four touchdown passes last week, aims to wrap up a perfect regular season for the Panthers.

No. 1 Rolesville (5-0, 4-0 Northern Athletic 4A) at Corinth Holders (1-4, 1-2), 7 p.m. –This could be a tough test for Rolesville, which has clinched the conference’s No. 1 playoff berth. Corinth Holders is much-improved this season and has a strong ground game behind RB Jaheim Fields.

No. 7 Wake Forest (4-1, 3-1 Northern Athletic 4A) at No. 6 Heritage (4-1, 2-1), 6:30 p.m. – This is likely a win-or-else game for these teams, battling for second place in the conference. Heritage played well in last week’s 29-21 loss to Rolesville, but Wake Forest has one of the area’s stingiest defenses.

Outside Wake County

Orange (3-2, 3-2 Big 8 3A) at No. 12 Chapel Hill (4-1, 4-1), 6:30 p.m. – A victory enables the host Tigers to finish in a first-place conference tie with Southern Durham, who they beat this season. Orange is coming off its best outing of the season, a 36-6 victory over Cedar Ridge.

No. 10 Princeton (6-0, 4-0 Carolina 1A) at Rosewood (6-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. – RB Jaydon Brooks (822 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns) leads the powerful Princeton ground game. But Rosewood RB Avante George has even better numbers – 1,030 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns. These are two of the state’s best 1A teams, meeting to settle the conference championship.
