Tributes pour in for late Maywood police sergeant

Condolences are pouring in for Maywood police Sgt. Jason Liaban, who died by suicide in Hackensack on Thursday. Liaban had been a police officer since 2008.

A joint Facebook account for Maywood councilmembers Jackie DeMuro and Jacquie Flynn posted a remembrance for Liaban.

"Our hearts are broken as we mourn Maywood's own Sgt. Jason Liaban," the post said. "Please hold his family, friends, and Maywood Police Department colleagues in your hearts as they struggle to process this tragic loss."

Mayor Richard Bolan posted that "words cannot express my sorrow."

Residents dropped off flowers at a memorial set up outside Maywood's municipal building Friday morning, where black bunting was hung.

The Maywood Fire Department similarly sent prayers and condolences to Liaban's family and changed its profile picture.

Other law enforcement organizations posted various memorial posts as well. On Thursday, the New Jersey PBA tweeted that they had lost a "brother."

Departments from Englewood, North Caldwell, Fair Lawn, Fairfield, Bergenfield and Old Tappan were among the local departments to post tributes to Liaban on Facebook.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and Hackensack Police Department, the two agencies investigating the circumstances surrounding Liaban's death, both posted on Facebook, with the prosecutor's office saying it would "continue to honor his service."

A source confirmed to NorthJersey.com that Liaban died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Hackensack University Medical Center. Prosecutors said no criminal activity is suspected.
