It’s fair to say that Hailey Bieber is the queen of all things glowing and dewy right now. From her glazed doughnut fingernails to her glazed doughnut skin Bieber has brought a bit of shimmer to our summer and beyond.

Cue the skin: Bieber recently lent her name to a limited-edition smoothie to help promote her new skincare line Rhode by Hailey Rhode Bieber and it promises to help give you her trademark glazed aesthetic from within.

We decided to try Bieber's trendy $17 smoothie to see if its taste and its purported skin-nourishing benefits hold up

Then, we decided to see if we could replicate it ourselves—both to save a bit of cash, and to make it more accessible to anyone who doesn’t live in Los Angeles. We also talked to our chief scientist, and he had a few things to say.

Here’s what we found.

In addition to some smoothie basics like almond milk, strawberries and avocado, the “skin-supporting smoothie,” is filled with some heavy-hitting skincare ingredients. It includes collagenhyaluronic acid (which I definitely didn't know you can eat) and sea-moss gel—which is known to be hydrating, antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial.

Then the glass is glazed with coconut cream (not to be confused with coconut milk) and strawberry jam.

With all of these skin-boosting ingredients, Bieber’s smoothie definitely reads like the fountain of youth in a cup. We consulted Reviewed’s chief scientist Dave Ellerby, who has a Ph.D in physiology and biomechanics, to see what he thought.

Overall, Ellerby seemed to approve of the ingredients and how they might impact the skin over time. "Sea moss is full of soluble fiber, which has many health benefits. Collagen protein keeps skin firm and smooth, and hyaluronic acid grabs onto water to keep skin hydrated. Both collagen and hyaluronic acid levels decrease with age, leading to wrinkles and drier skin," Ellerby explained. But the benefits do come with some caveats.

“Most studies showing benefits from collagen and hyaluronic acid are on people who are 40-plus, and to see any effect, you’ll need about 10 grams of collagen and 100 milligrams of hyaluronic acid per day—so make sure you add enough supplement and don’t expect major changes to your skin if you’re relatively young,” says Ellerby.

He also noted that sea moss picks up chemicals from seawater, including heavy metals like mercury, so sea moss is safer consumed in relatively small amounts.

Finally, he noted that collagen and hyaluronic acid mainly come from animal skin and tendons, so this smoothie isn’t for vegans and vegetarians.

"The short answer: It should help skin health, particularly if you like some cowhide and rooster combs in your smoothies—and who doesn't!" says Ellerby.

How did Hailey Bieber’s smoothie taste?

Since I live in Los Angeles, I was able to get my hands on the genuine, real-deal Erewhon Market-made, Hailey Bieber’s Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie.

We popped an order into Instacart and an hour and a half later I was sipping this strawberry sensation, channeling Mrs. Bieber and all of her glazed-skin glory.

It was sweet, creamy and decadent, and a bit like drinking all the best parts of a strawberry glazed doughnut. All hail Hailey Bieber for making a skin-healthy dessert!

How do I make the Hailey Bieber smoothie?

The smoothie has some seriously esoteric ingredients that are hard to find anywhere—even in Los Angeles where it’s made. We were, however, able to find everything that's not readily available at the grocery store through Amazon.

Once I added all of the superfoods into my cart, my Amazon bill was a whopping $102.40. The perishable items were bought through Instacart for an additional $20, making my shopping list reach a grand total of $122.40. Or, roughly $12.24 a smoothie.

Here are the ingredients we sourced from Amazon:

Depending on your grocery store, you may be able to find medjool dates, sugar-free strawberry jam, and coconut cream for much less.

Erewhon doesn’t give the exact measurements of each item, but we were able to infer the amounts through a bit of taste-testing and some online research.

Our DIY skin-smoothie recipe

Into the blender went:

  • 1 cup almond milk

  • 1 cup strawberries

  • 1/4 of an avocado

  • 2 pitted dates

  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup

Then, based on recommended serving sizes on the containers, we added:

  • 2 scoops vanilla collagen powder

  • 1 tablespoon hyaluronic acid

  • 2 tablespoons sea moss gel

We blended everything up in a Vitamix to ensure the frozen berries and dates were blended into a creamy and frothy consistency.

We then poured a small amount of the strawberry glaze and coconut cream into the bottom of the glass, topped it with the smoothie, tossed in a straw, and basked in all of the sweet, skin-loving glory this smoothie promised.

The verdict

Was it delicious? Yes. Can you easily replicate this smoothie at home? Absolutely.

The at-home smoothie tasted exactly like the official one. At about $12.25 a smoothie at home, it’s definitely a savings. It’s still hardly a cheap DIY option, but it does make for a fun splurge. The overall cost, the heaviness, and the sweetness make it unrealistic to consume with the regularity necessary to reap all those skin-boosting benefits.

I’d tweak the recipe a bit to make it more affordable, and consumable. First, I'd skip the avocado and just eat it on a salad later on. The smoothie uses such a small amount that it hardly provides any skin benefits at all.

The avocado is also what makes the maple syrup necessary, so it's an otherwise unnecessary sweetener. If you want the creaminess of the avocado, I was able to achieve that—and amp up the sweetness—with half a banana.

I’d also omit the strawberry glaze and the coconut cream. While both add some level of luxury to the drink, it makes the smoothie too sweet and too heavy to drink with any regularity. Finally, per our chief scientist’s notes, I’d omit the sea moss (or only consume it once a week).

Omitting those items brings my at-home smoothie down to $7.70 each. Not bad for a truly delicious, thick and decadent smoothie that is bursting with skin benefits.
