Tried Irish egg rolls? Cape restaurants offer creative menus, fun, for St. Patrick's Day

Although Cape Cod is 2,937 miles away from Ireland, today — on St. Patrick’s Day — the peninsula celebrates its Celtic cousins.

While not authentic to Ireland, corned beef and cabbage (likely brought to the U.S. by Jewish immigrants) is the hallmark of St. Patrick's Day for many Irish Americans and those who consider themselves one-day Irish to celebrate the big day. You'll find plenty of the dish on our list, as well as less traditional items, like whiskey-marinated steak tips, an Irish flag cocktail and Irish egg rolls.

And with St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Friday this year, many places are offering a weekend full of food and festivities.

Here are five places to check out:

Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub

273 Main St., Falmouth, 508-548-0285

The Irish flag is always flying outside Liam’s and the pub feels Irish year-round, but on St. Patrick’s Day, the vibe is kicked up a little. Liam Maguire's offers a wide array of steak cuts on the regular menu, as well as beef and Guinness stew, shepherd's pie and whiskey-marinated steak tips. And don’t forget the Irish coffee to round out the meal and keep you wide awake for music from the homeland.

With instruments old and new in the background, Liam Maguire plays at Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Falmouth in 1998, which opened in 1994. Maguire died in 2021 at age 80.

On Thursday, March 16, get Ben Lawlor's corned beef and cabbage for $14.

Pelham House has added a corned beef dinner ($25) to its Thursday-Saturday dinner menu, that includes house-brined corned beef, roasted Thumbelina carrots, confit marble potatoes, steamed cabbage, Dijon and apple cider jus, and Pelham House brown bread.

But the resort is also offering an afternoon journey  – a bar crawl – to explore Ireland’s drink and tradition of warm socializing.

Tickets to the St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl are $50 each, with the event beginning on the rooftop overlooking Nantucket Sound, followed by bonfires on the resort’s 400-foot private beach and then a trip to Après Sea for indoor curling and live Irish music.

Stops on the crawl are 45 minutes each, featuring a special drink: The rooftop features an “Irish Flag Cocktail” and music with Dave Hickey; warm up on the beach with hot Irish coffee with Bailey’s and finish at the grounded-level Apres Sea space with Guinness or cider and more live music with David Hoffman.

O’Shea’s Olde Inne

Sean Brennan performed virtually at O'Shea's Olde Inne in West Dennis during the pandemic. The answer to keeping live Irish music there was a 100-foot screen and a live stream but now O'Shea's celebrates St. Patrick's Day in person with a line-up of three bands for March 17.

All Irish, all day.

The musical entertainment lineup of bands for St. Patrick’s Day is: 1:30 p.m. Wild Life; 4:30 p.m. Heyday; and The Skiffs at 8:30 p.m.

A taste of the Irish runs through many of the dishes on O’Shea’s menu, from the traditional lamb stew ($18) to a grilled sirloin lamb steak with all the fixings for $24. There is also a corned beef Reuben for $14, but whatever you order, we recommend you start with the County Cavan O’Rigmarole. A supremely shareable app, the dish is a combination plate of Irish egg rolls, Irish farmhouse skins and chicken tenders for $16. And thank goodness, O’Shea’s famous Bailey’s Bread Pudding is still on the menu for $8 – spring for the side of vanilla ice cream ($2) for a perfectly sweet finish.

Start your holiday celebration early at Keltic Kitchen, where you will find a traditional Irish breakfast on the menu and the ingredients for sale in the shop out back in case you want to make your own long after St. Patrick’s Day has passed.

Dublin-born owner David Dempsey serves breakfast and lunch all day in the cozy eatery that is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week. You will find homemade corned beef here, but it’s in hash with the choice of eggs on top.

Dempsey has told the Cape Cod Times in the past that he chose to spell Keltic with a K for the alliteration and to encourage the right pronunciation of the word.
