I am one of those people that firmly believes New Year’s resolutions should begin after Mardi Gras season in the Deep South.

We shouldn’t deny ourselves of the delicacy that is king cake. We can work all of the calories off after Fat Tuesday — plus king cake calories don’t count, right?

I live in Bay St. Louis and the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods in New Orleans are only about a 45 minute drive away. I try to get to New Orleans a few times a month to go on a jog, explore a new part of the city and try something new.

For years, my king cake consumption has consisted of the best on the Mississippi Coast (there are dozens) and Dong Phong, another of my favorites. But I realized that I was missing so many options from the Big Easy.

I wanted to try a place I had never been to before. And I also have recently become obsessed with Taylor Swift and the “Midnights” album. So I decided to have the best of both worlds: a slice of king cake from Bywater Bakery in the New Orleans.

The popular neighborhood spot made Taylor Swift’s birthday cake last year when she and partner Joe Alwyn were together in the city for a few days.

If Taylor loved her “Lavender Haze” inspired birthday cake from Bywater Bakery, I knew all too well that I would love the menu.

My cousin, also named Taylor, drove over for a quick lunch a few weeks ago and ordered from sidewalk window. We got there around 1 p.m. and most of the king cake slices were sold for the day. The worker who helped us, though, said their favorite flavor, chantilly, was still in stock.

The king cake is made with a traditional brioche dough was covered in purple, green and gold sugar and a delicious icing. The inside was filled was fresh berries and a marscapone cream. It was rich and light at the same time. Taylor and I shared one slice, and it was more than enough for both of us.

If you love the Gentilly cakes at Rouses, you’ll love this option from Bywater Bakery, too. The shop also sells a variety of other flavors, including pecan praline, vegan bourbon cinnamon, crawfish, boudin, spinach and artichoke and more.
