During the winter, I try my best to be nice to my hair. I add a hair mask to my shower routine (this is my current favorite), I use a wide-toothed comb to get out tangles, and I remember to use silk scrunchies. But, TBH, between super hot showers, blustery winds and static-inducing beanies, my hair still takes a beating.

After looking in the mirror and seeing breakage, scraggly ends and an overall lackluster appearance, I knew I had to take my hair care up a notch. My first step was to turn to Madison Reed’s Color Reviving Gloss to add some much-needed shine and hydration to my locks.

While you can do your own gloss at home, I stopped by the Madison Reed Color Bar in NYC to speak with my stylist about my concerns. After agreeing that the gloss — it’s packed with keratin, argan oil and ginseng root extract — was the right move, my stylist pulled out a bottle of Glassa, aka the brand’s clear gloss. (I don’t have color-treated hair and wasn’t looking to add any color, but the gloss does come in several semi-permanent shades.)

After fully coating all of my hair in the award-winning gloss, my stylist let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then it was time to wash the gloss out and blow-dry my hair.

Once it was dry, my hair felt totally refreshed. Without adding any highlights or using a pair of scissors, my frayed cuticles looked healed, my natural color looked more even, and my hair was softer. While it wasn’t a dramatic transformation, it made me wonder what took me so long to try a hair gloss.

Madison Reed’s Color Reviving Gloss lasts about six to eight washes, so, while it’s not a permanent fix, it felt good to use it as a sort of bandaid between hair cuts. According to the brand, the “gloss absorbs into the cuticle layer of the hair without putting it through a chemical change.” Essentially, this means that the gloss is much gentler than permanent hair color, yet it’s not a solution for those looking to cover grays.

Each bottle of gloss contains about one to two applications depending on your hair length. If you have really long hair like me, you might even want to pick up a second bottle to be safe. In my opinion, at $25 per bottle, this hair treatment is the perfect affordable fix to hold you over between salon appointments.
