The whole world has seen them on the screen, but Somerset County residents drive by them every day.

And now, they can get a reward for a visit.

Six Somerset County restaurants that have been featured on food media will be highlighted on the new As Seen On Trail, which Somerset County Tourism launched online on Friday, Nov. 11.

To receive a free mobile passport to participate in the trail, visit visitsomersetnj.org/as-seen-on-somerset/. The first 500 people who check in to all six locations using the mobile passport will receive a free retro T-shirt, inspired by the throwback theme of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”

The trail was encouraged by the success of Somerset County Tourism’s Sip and See Trail, a self-guided tour that launched in June in which visitors collect a stamp for a passport as they visit each of the county’s six craft beverage destinations.

“This trail is definitely not to compete with Sip and See, but we wanted to create something that people of all ages could do, families could do together and people who don’t drink alcohol could enjoy,” said Melissa DeFreest, vice president of tourism and communication at the Somerset County Business Partnership. “Plus, a lot of restaurants have told us, ‘We appeared on so-and-so, but we’re not sure how to promote it.’ We took the theme of those places and created those links to make a cohesive trail.”

Somerset County foodies may notice that a few restaurants that have appeared on food media are not yet included on the trail. That’s because each restaurant must agree to be on the trail by sharing information with the mobile passport. DeFreest hopes that eventually, all local restaurants that have been featured on food media will find time to upload their information to the mobile passport.

Eight county restaurants have been featured on food media, including “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports’ One Bite Pizza reviews, and the Food Network’s Macy's Thanksgiving Cake Spectacular competition.

“I like to think that we have been able to draw a lot of different and eclectic eateries that have been able to showcase what they do and what they do well,” said DeFreest. “I think it’s nice for studios to get out of major cities and come to more suburban areas to get that off-the-beaten-track feel. You’re not getting a mass-produced item here. You’re getting something from a mom-and-pop place that’s really the lifeblood of the area.”

Here are the now-famous food destinations featured on the As Seen On Trail:

Big Pinks BBQ, Bridgewater

Big Pinks BBQ may be a “broken-down food truck,” as Guy Fieri said on the “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” episode featuring the truck on July 29, but at least its smoker works. The truck, owned by Martin Gleason and parked at 483 Union Ave., is known for its smoked meats and sandwiches, as well as 13 different sauces. The menu is inspired by different cities and flavors throughout the country.

The episode featured two Big Pinks BBQ sandwiches, including the Abe Frohman, a house-made sausage sandwich on a potato roll topped with American cheese, onion rings and sauces, inspired by Gleason’s favorite movie, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” The episode also featured the Big Pink, a towering 8-inch sandwich filled with various truck-made meats including brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork and sausage, topped with several sauces, a blend of four Italian cheeses, and onion rings on an onion roll.

Blue Sheep Bake Shop, Somerville

Karin Giamella’s creative and colorful bakery is known for its custom cakes and cupcakes, and that’s what it did best in 2018 at the Food Network’s Macy's Thanksgiving Cake Spectacular competition. The decade-old local staple won the cupcake portion of the contest for both taste and presentation with its orange-scented cupcake filled with Cointreau ganache and topped with cranberry Swiss buttercream, sugared cranberries and fondant painted leaves inside a chocolate cornucopia.

Those who visit the bakery for an As Seen On Trail stamp will receive one free scoop of ice cream. The Blue Sheep Bake Shop on Division Street also offers items such as French macarons, ice cream sandwiches, cookies and stuffed cookies, fudge brownies, dessert bars and more. Trendy and holiday-themed sweets also are frequently added to the menu.

Chimney Rock Inn, Bridgewater

The Chimney Rock Inn has been around in some form since 1863 — a fact that baffled Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports during his January visit for a One Bite pizza review. The long-running Bridgewater staple, which also has a Flemington location, is known for its thin-crust pizza, which earned it a 7.6 out of 10 from Portnoy.

At “The Rock,” pies come in a variety of styles, including the gluten-free pie, 30-inch Epic pie and Rock ’55 classic pie. Other more outlandish varieties include a pretzel-crust macaroni and cheese pizza, a vegan chili pizza and a Mexican pizza.

DeLucia's Brick Oven Pizza, Raritan

Following a visit from Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports during his January visit for a One Bite pizza review, wait times at DeLucia's Brick Oven Pizza stretched to two hours — and for good reason. The 105-year-old pizzeria earned a 9.4 out of 10 from Portnoy, which tied it in second place out of the more than 1,000 pizzerias that Portnoy has reviewed. Those who visit the pizzeria for an As Seen On Trail stamp will receive 10% off their order.

“Is this the best pizza I’ve ever had? It’s 100% in the conversation,” Portnoy said in his review. “You drive 3-4 hours for this pizza. Absolutely spectacular.” Since the review, customers have come from as far as Pittsburgh, Maine, Maryland and Miami for the pizza, which is made in the same brick oven that owner Christian DeLucia’s great-grandfather used when he opened the pizzeria in 1917.

Joe's Meat Market, South Bound Brook

Just weeks after Guy Fieri of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” headed to Big Pinks BBQ and Turf Surf & Earth this summer, he went to Joe's Meat Market, a South Bound Brook deli and butcher shop.

“Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” isn’t all about grease and cheat meals. In July, Guy Fieri visited Turf Surf & Earth, a fast-casual restaurant featuring customizable sandwiches, salads, tacos and rice platters with plenty of healthy and plant-based options. It also offers breakfast entrees and signature coffee drinks.

Those who visit Turf Surf & Earth for an As Seen On Trail stamp will receive 15% off their order. The eatery is owned by Byron Salazar, who also owns Turf N Surf Burger Grill in Warren.
