Trinity seeks 2K jars of peanut butter, jelly

MONROE — Trinity Lutheran Church is trying to beat its own record while helping those in need.

Last year, the church’s Spread the Good News ministry held its first one-month drive to collect jars of peanut butter and jelly.

The ministry received more than it had hoped: 1,600 jars, which were given to area food pantries and service organizations.

This year, Trinity hopes to collect 2,000 jars.

"In order to reach that, we need the help of everyone in our community," said Alison Beeker, chairperson of the Spread the Good News ministry.

During April, peanut butter and jelly can be brought to Trinity’s church and school office, 323 Scott St. in Monroe.

“The church and school office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for drop-offs. We would also encourage people to join us in worship and drop off their contributions there as well. We meet to worship at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays,” Beeker said.

All varieties of peanut butter and jelly will be accepted.

“They must be store-bought,” Beeker said. “Last year, the most unusual jelly we received was apple jelly. Last year, we were able to donate to nine different agencies."

Each local agency will receive a percentage of the jars Trinity collects.

"It is based on the amount of clientele they serve," Beeker said. "Monroe County Opportunity Program and Oaks of Righteousness receive a greater portion because they serve more people than smaller agencies like the Philadelphia House or Selah’s Center of Hope."

The Spread the Good News ministry, Beeker said, “is focused on the spiritual and physical needs of those living in our community with food insecurity. We had 15 volunteers last year. We are implementing a new system this year that I'm hoping will get even more volunteers involved.”
