Trio of Watertown Arrows' wrestlers lead list of top area performers for week ending Dec. 4

The Watertown High School wrestling team really couldn’t have enjoyed a better start to the 2021-22 season and that’s why a trio of Arrow wrestlers are leading off the Public Opinion’s list of top area performers for the week ending Dec. 4.

Watertown rolled two a pair of huge wins over Yankton and Beresford/Alcester-Hudson on Thursday and then downed four foes to win the Marv Sherrill Dual Tournament on Saturday in the Civic Arena.

Leading the way for the Arrows were:

Sloan Johannsen — A returning state Class A indiviudal champion, Johannsen enjoyed a 6-0 start to the season at 113 pounds with four pins and two forfeits over the two events.

Ben Althoff — A returning state Class A runner-up, Althoff also opened with a 6-0 mark at 170 pounds. He had four pins and two forfeit wins.

Brock Eitreim — Eitreim also won six matches at 195 pounds, two pins and four decisions.

Listed below are other athletes being honored this week. A number of other area wrestlers won individual titles in tourneys, but we’ve highlighted the grapplers who won at least five matches last week or won all of their matches by fall.

Wrestling

Holden Hawkins, Sisseton — The 113-pounder kicked off his season by winning five matches and the 113-pound championship in the Dan Unruh Invite at Wahpeton, N.D.

Dylan Zell, Kingsbury County — Zell recorded three falls while taking the 138-pound title and leading the Knights to the team championship in the Clark-Willow Lake Booster Club invite.

Connor Johnson, Kingsbury County — Johnson did even better than Zell, going 4-0 with four falls on the way to the 170-pound championship in the Clark-Willow Lake Booster Club Invite.

Abi Reil, Clark-Willow Lake — Reil won the girls’ 113-pound division at Clark, taking both of her matches with pins.

Jesse Schneck, Milbank — Schneck went 6-0 at 160 pounds last week, notching two pins in a triangular at Madison and three pins and a major decision on Saturday .

Landon Novy, Milbank — Novy also went 6-0 at 285 during the week with three falls, a decision and two forfeit wins.

Gymnastics

Myah Morris, Watertown — The Arrow senior’s return to high school gymnastics went pretty well on Saturday. She helped Watertown finish third in the Lolly Forseth Invitational at Sioux Falls by finishing second in the uneven bars, vault and floor exercise and third in the all-around competition (37.15).

Dani Yamaura, Milbank Area — Yamaura won the floor exercise and all-around titles (33.75) in a triangular at Sisseton and then placed in two individual events and took fourth in the all-around on Saturday in Vermillion’s Winter Wonderland meet.

Paige Simon, Deuel — Simon won the balance beam and floor exercise during the Cardinals' season-opening dual against Madison.

Laycee Anderson, Deuel — Anderson won the vault and took third in the all-around competition (32.55) during the season-opening dual against Madison.

Hockey

Jaclyn Lloyd, Watertown — Lloyd helped the Watertown Laker girls break into the win column by scoring two goals in a 3-2 victory over Oahe. She also added the team’s lone goal in an 11-1 loss to Mitchell.

Emma Foisel, Watertown — Foisel recorded 33 saves in the Watertown Laker girls’ 3-2 win over Oahe.

Owen McBride, Watertown — The Laker boys suffered home losses to Sioux Falls 7-0 and Oahe 6-3 over the weekend. McBride still tallied 40 saves against Sioux Falls and 22 against Oahe.

Girls Basketball

Mali York, Great Plains Lutheran — York notched 12 points, three steals and three blocked shots in the Panthers’ 46-45 season-opening loss to Oldham-Ramona-Rutland.

Bryn Holmen, Great Plains Lutheran — Holmen produced six points and 18 rebounds in the loss.

Olivia Holmen, Great Plains Lutheran — Bryn’s younger sister added nine points and 16 rebounds in the game.
