Trojan tennis team plays to 1-1 record Saturday

The Sturgis tennis team placed second on Saturday as they hosted a tri meet with Stevensville-Lakeshore and Battle Creek Central.

The Lancers won the event with 16 team points. Sturgis finished with eight while Battle Creek Central did not register a victory on the day.

Sturgis won all eight of its matches against the Bearcats, but lost all eight to Lakeshore.

Rylee Carver won over Bonnie Ferazzi at first singles with scores of 6-0 and 6-0. She was upended by Josie Arbanas of Lakeshore 6-0, 6-3.

In second singles action, Emily Schuller dropped a match to Lanie Brant of Lakeshore by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Schuller did pick up a victory over Dynise Anderson 6-3, 6-4. At third singles, Tess Scheske beat Paige Fox 6-0, 6-0 but fell in her match to Chloe Arbanas 6-4, 6-0.

Gracie Perry had an injury default to Lakeshore’s Amber Mealman in the second set. Arely Sosa played for her against Battle Creek Central’s Mira Shabaui and won 6-1, 6-3.

Sturgis won all four doubles matches over Battle Creek Central in straight sets.

Johanna Rooyakkers and Maddie Golden won at first doubles, 6-3, 6-2.

Katherine Steele and Ava Stewart took care of business in second doubles, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Bella Currier and Rosa Soto won at third doubles by scores of 6-0, 6-3.

Lauren Whitehead and Chloe Clark’s victory over BCC’s team came by way of 6-1, 6-0 scores.

Rooyakkers and Golden fell to Lakeshore’s Marina Ferreira and Cameron Holt 6-3, 6-2. Steele and Stewart forced a third set against Lakeshore’s Laine Haynes and Baylee Price but fell 6-4, 1-6 and 2-6.

At third doubles, Currier and Soto dropped their match to Lakeshore’s Sarika Kona and Sophie Samuel 6-2 and 7-5 while Whitehead and Clark fell to Lakeshore’s Maddie Hawks and Ella Brown by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
