Trooper injured as alleged drunk driver smashes into his cruiser in Taunton

TAUNTON — An alleged drunk driver collided with a Massachusetts State Police cruiser at Cohannet and Winthrop streets on Thursday night.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Photos from the collision show the alleged drunk driver's vehicle smashed into the driver's side of the cruiser near the Geko gas station. The trooper inside was taken by ambulance to Morton Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, according to Massachusetts State Police.

State police booked the driver, a 44-year-old Taunton man, at their barracks in Middleboro, charging him with operating under the influence of liquor. A bail clerk let him go on $100 cash bail, according to state police. The man was scheduled to be arraigned in Taunton District Court on Friday.

Over the years, the diagonal intersection of Winthrop and Cohannet has been the scene of several wrecks and pedestrian strikes, including a January 2019 incident in which a local 76-year-old was seriously injured.
