Boy is second to die in Daytona I-95 retention pond accident

A 12-year-old boy trapped underwater in a van that crashed into a retention pond on Interstate 95 in Daytona Beach on Sunday has died, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The boy is one of five people that were traveling in the van, and the second person from the accident to die.

Earlier Tuesday, troopers said a 39-year-old Daytona Beach woman also pulled from the submerged van died at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

The boy died Tuesday at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, said FHP Lt. Tara Crescenzi.

Volusia County firefighters rescued all five victims from the submerged van, and a Volusia County deputy helped perform CPR on the victims, said sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant.

Crescenzi said Wednesday she had not confirmed if the occupants of the van were a family.

The van was heading south on I-95 when it crashed around 8:14 p.m., Crescenzi said.

The driver of the van, a 46-year-old Daytona Beach man, tried to get off I-95 at the Beville Road exit but lost control of the vehicle on a curve, said FHP Lt. Tara Crescenzi.

The van struck a sign and continued off the road until it crashed into the retention pond. The van was completely submerged in seven to eight feet of water, Crescenzi said.

The driver of the van and a 13-year-old girl were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center with minor injuries where they were treated and discharged, troopers said.

A 10-year-old boy taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando in serious condition on Sunday was reported to be in stable condition Tuesday, Crescenzi said.

The crash remains under investigation.
