A motorcyclist was seriously injured and his passenger died after a crash just after noon Sunday just on I-275 at Gandy Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 44-year-old male from Belle Fourche, South Carolina, was traveling south on I-275 in the inside lane. His passenger was a 49-year-old woman from Fort Myers.

Another vehicle, an SUV, driven by a 60-year-old man from Auburndale, was slowing for the traffic, ahead of the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist did not slow down or stop, causing it to crash into the back of the SUV.

Both the man and woman on the motorcycle were ejected onto the road. The two were transported to a nearby hospital. The woman later died. The man suffered serious injuries.

Neither of the motorcycle occupants wore helmets.

The driver of the SUV and three passengers did not suffer any injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol did not release the names of the man and woman involved in the crash because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, an amendment to the state Constitution.
