Troopers said Deltona man caused fatal Flagler County head-on collision two years ago

A Deltona man was jailed Monday after Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigators concluded he caused a head-on collision in Flagler County almost two years ago killing one person and injuring two others.

John Frederick Garrison, 42, was charged with vehicular homicide and two counts of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury. He was being held Tuesday in the Volusia County Branch Jail on $30,000 bond awaiting extradition to Flagler County, officials said.

According to an arrest warrant, on April 24, 2022, Garrison was eastbound on State Road 11 in Flagler County trying to keep up with a friend who was ahead of him.

Troopers said as Garrison and his friend tried to overtake several vehicles including a tractor-trailer, his view was obstructed by his friend's vehicle.

When the friend merged back into the eastbound lane, Garrison realized that oncoming traffic in the westbound lane of State Road 11 was too close and he didn't have enough space to merge behind his friend, troopers said.

The westbound driver tried to avoid the collision but Garrison was traveling too fast and struck the vehicle in the front as it took evasive action, troopers said.

The fatal crash claimed the life of one person and injured two others, troopers said.
