Tropical Storm Bret developed Monday afternoon in the Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center announced at 5 p.m. Monday.

It’s projected to approach the Lesser Antilles on Thursday and Friday as a possible hurricane, bringing a risk of flooding from heavy rainfall, hurricane-force winds and dangerous storm surge and waves, according to the NHC.

Victor Murphy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says Tropical Storm Bret should have no impact on the weather for the holiday weekend. If it were to enter into the Gulf of Mexico, it would be at least 10 days from now, he explained. “The probabilities of this are so low,” he said.

“I would not be worried,” Murphy said. “However, I would encourage anyone with travel plans to a location along the Atlantic Coast or Gulf Coast of the U.S. or else to the entire Caribbean to monitor the seven day Tropical Weather Outlook forecast from the National Hurricane Center.”
